I know LUVs came with 4.56, 4.10, 3.73 rear-end gears.

My question is what year/model did each ratio come in, and without tearing them apart, how can you tell which is which?

Is there any ID #'s on the rear-end anywhere to help you ID them?

I know some things on some vehicles can be identified by VIN #, but I don't know if this is true about LUV's.

I wanna put a 3.73 rear-end in my 2wd '80 long bed....and before I go out and buy a rear-end, I wanna be sure I am actually getting the right one.

I already had my 1.8 engine rebuilt/beefed up, added a weber, took off all of the smog emissions crap, put on a new exhaust with all 2-inch pipe and new muffler, put in hotter coil/ignition stuff, I'm getting a 5-speed (w/clutch ,flywheel, and pressure plate) out of a 84 Isuzu Pup, stuck in new bucket seats out of a '85 Trooper, added a chrome bar grille (from a cut down S-10 one I got from a buddy), got some damn nice new 15x205/60 wheels and tires (at cost from a buddy that works for a local tire shop), added new carpet and pad and a dash cover, stuffed in a one-helluva-kick-ass stereo system into the cab and then it's off to paint....

And my other half is finally starting to see what all the fuss is about "that funny looking little truck"...lol... I let her take it for a spin with me along the other day and she was definitely impressed! She was driving the ass off the little truck trying to see what it was made of...and the LUV definitely passed the test.

If anyone else can think of anything else to do to increase performance, handling, etc..let me know.

This has been a 6 month project so far and I'm almost done...but what a blast!

Thanks guys for all your help...and now I'll STFU ....lol....and let someone else post.

i was only ever aware of 4:10s for the 4x4s and 4:56s for the 2wds. But i guess 3:73 would make sense for a deisel.

I checked my 79 2wd lastnight and it has a 3.7 rearend. Which matches the specs in the sales book at the "Info Section" of this site.

Wow..according to the spec's in the broshure on my '80..so does mine!

Now I don't have to go find one and do the swap after all.

Cool...you just saved me some time and $$....Thanks!
