Did it smoke like this before the other pump was put on? You could pull the wire to it now and check as well. It should run 30 seconds or more on what is in the bowl of the carb. What I'm thinking is that perhaps the pump you are using is putting out too much pressure and blowing fuel past the needle valve and into the carb.

You should also check that the fuel return line is clear and hooked up. That should help relieve quite a bit of excess pressure.

The mixture adjustment is right at the base of the carb, on the primary (outer) side. Most of the LUV carbs I've seen have it right out in the open, but later Isuzus I've worked on have it hidden behind a plug.

If its not the pump overpowering the carb, then my gut says the rebuild either didn't get done right or the carb still needs adjustment.

Your problem is that you still have the stock Hitachi carb :D. You should look into getting a Weber

He said he's in California and has to have it pass smog inspection. The Weber won't do that.

Usually all you have to do is find that funky round barrel Hittachi thing, remove the end, and replace the filter that pops out. Most of these pumps are discarded when there is nothing wrong but a plugged filter. When you go to the auto parts place and ask for one they will look at you funny and say there isn't one. Just ask for one for a Datsun 240Z. Same thing.
Yes, your replacement pump will not work. Probably one from a fuel injected car. Luv operates on 3-5 PSI.

Be real careful... if that pump is off VW/Audi then there a real good chance its for a Fuel Injected motor, in which case the pressure that thing pumps out has got to be enourmous. Be sure to confirm the fuel pressure.

What you want to look for is either a faucet or rotary style pump... like he said above- putting out 3-5lbs.

I just picked up a CB Performance rotary style pump... they aren't cheap but they work real nice! http://www.cbperformance.com/default.asp

Faucet pumps are ok.... just not as reliable as rotary- they also make a real cheesy soundin noise.
