 Post subject: Engine Swapping?
PostPosted: Thu Apr 28, 2005 5:45 pm
My neighbor has 2 LUV Trucks. He wants me to take the gas engine out of the 81 2wd and install it into the 82 4wd diesel. What can I expect for interchange problems?

Thank you!

you'll have a cat. in the 82 so you can take off the smog stuff, uhh... maybe a few wiring things (nick-nacks) but that should be it, but our little living dictionary (no offense 800xl) should have more info. on this.

just saw your post in the classifieds, is the 4x4 truck in the ad the same one your dropping the 81' motor in, then no, it won't work cause the starter on the diesel is on the driver's side and the starter on the gas motor is on the pass. side... the trannies would have to be swapped too in order for it to work.

Thank you for your reply!

Yes that is my add. I'm not sure what my neighbor will want to do so I am looking at all options for him.

So the swap will be most difficult because of the starter and tranny?

Can you think of anything else?

What would you do, try to sell them, part them out or make the swap yourself?

the trannie is either for two engines the diesel or the gas, simply put you could bolt up the gas motor to the diesel trans.... but the only way you can get your truck started is to push it and dump the clutch cause the starter can't fit in the hole in the trannie if it's on the other side that it bolts to.

It won't work.

But i'd part out the trucks (keeping anything you may need along down the road) cause no one has a constant $300+ bucks to buy a parts truck but some usually have $30-50 to buy small stuff, you'll get more $$$ outta those trucks in the end if you part em'
