I've got a 79 4x4 with a leaky steering gear box.

Schucks(http://www.partsamerica.com) lists the seals I need. The Haynes manual has no pictures on the rebuild, and the pitman arm is "rust-welded" to the shaft. I've broken one standard puller trying to get it apart.

Questions:

:!: What is a reasonable fee to have a shop replace the seals and/or rebuild the box?
:!: Should I consider power steering out of a Trooper instead? I can get a pump, box, hoses and reservoir for around $150.
:!: Should I only have the pitman arm pressed off and do it myself? I've done just about everything else on this truck imaginable.
:!: Does anyone know where some good pictures are online?

For better pictures get a series 9 factory shop manual. They show up on ebay quite a lot. It has better info on rebuilding the gearbox than the haynes, and a lot better info on the 4x4 in general.

That arm can be a giant bear to get off. The idler arm on the other side is tough to get off the shaft, and the pitman can be twice as hard. I haven't done one for years and had help the last time I did so I don't have a lot of tips to offer. However, my idler arm procedure goes like this:

Hook up a puller
turn it up until you get a fair bit of tension against it.
Take a stout bar about 3-4 feet long and place it on the arm from above
Hit that bar with a BFH (Big Frickin Hammer)

The trooper power steering is a good option. I'd guess you'd be out about that amount to have the box rebuilt and you'd still be turning the wheel with arm power. Why rebuild when you could actually upgrade?

Can you make a post after you put that sucker in. I'd consider that
down the road. Oh and when I took my pitman arm off the steerinbox awhile back, the machine shop got it to come off, but they said it broke
their puller tool.
