I currently have a 2WD '79, solid body and 48k Miles on the Drivetrain. I will have a 4WD '80, rusted Body High mi Drivetrain, in the garage in about a week.

How hard would it be to swap the '80 drivetrain onto the '79?

Thanks

IMHO, it would be much easier to put the 79 body onto the 4x4 chassis. Just put your 48K mile motor in and rebuild 4x4 trans and t-case while the body is off and you'll be golden.

Yeah after thinking about it I can get the donor truck in the garage and tear it down clean it up and then start the swap. I have never pulled the body off anything before so how difficult would it be for me and the boy to do? and Is there any thing I should look out for that yall have ran into?

Thanks again

Just take the bed and front clip off first.....pretty straightforward. 4 Bolts hold the cab down, just make sure ALL wires and cables are disconnected before removing the cab.

I'm not sure about different years, but I know the 80 that I'm working on has six bolts holding the cab to the frame, and there is no front clip. It's molded to the cab like a unibody.

2 bolts on either side of the radiator, 1 under the drivers feet, 1 under the passengers feet, and one on either side behind the seat. Undo the steering column bolts located under the speedometer and undo the ones at the firewall, now you can disconnect the shaft from the steering box and slide towards the rear of the cab. take the floor shifter out of the transmission (I believe they are 12mm bolts). You will have to drain the radiator & disconnect the hoses and trans cooling lines if you have automatic. You will have to disconnect the clutch cable if you have stick. The master cylinder has to be diconnected at the brake lines. Now all you should have to do is make sure all your wires are labled before disconnecting so that you know where to plug them back in. Get 2 cases of beer and some strong friends and lift. If you have access to a Backhoe, hook straps to the four corners and center the lifting point where the windshield meets the roof. That should get you close to a balancing point. Don't hold me responsible if I accidently forgot to mention any part of this procedure, but this should get you where you want to be.

PS Why do you want to take the cab off?

# of bolts doesn't really concern me, I will figure that out when I get to that point. Thanks for quoting that thread. It will be a little reminder of the things I forget after a 6 pack.
