FYI, I just put a sway bar from a mid-80's trooper into my 4x4 Luv. All I had to do was cut the skid plate a little.

The Trooper sway bar is 23 mm dia. while the Luv one was 21 mm.

It feels better; doesn't roll over in the turns as much

I think it was well worth the $20 from PicknPull. Of course, today I found out this weekend's 1/2 price sale. Figures

The years that should fit would be 1984-1987 Troopers, but not the 1987.5 as they changed a # of things that year. BTW how well do they fit? i'm looking into buying new Sway-A-Way bars for my 1980 Luv 4x4, but i don't know if I want to fork out $230 for the pair!! how much skid plate trimming did you have to do?

I had to cut away part of the vertical supports that go up the the mounting bolts. The issue is that the trooper bars have a slight jog in them that interferes with the supports. I don't think it affected the integrity of the skid plate at all. If I have a chance, I'll try to get a picture.

The only other parts you might need are the rubber bushings where the bar mounts to the chassis, since the sway bar is thicker. I grabbed all the mounting hardware when I got mine, but I ended up using my old hardware. I just squeezed the bar into the smaller bushings.

Has anyone installed a rear swaybar on a 80 4x4? I noticed ADDCO make a rear bar but only for 2 wheel drive.

Do you have a link for that sway bar? I would think you could use one for a Trooper/P'UP? Sure would be nice to shore up the back end of one of these little scoots...

Last time I was at PicknPull I looked around for something I could adapt to the rear. I was unable to find anything that looked easy.

I would sure be interested in a rear sway bar. It would help with understeer.

I finally took a couple of pictures of my sway bar and the mods to the skid plate. I hope they post, I've never posted pictures before. You can see that I cut back the mounting bracket and only used 1 bolt on each side.

Is the ride any more stable than w/ the stock bar? how much better does it handle?

Keep in mind it's only 20% thicker, so it's not a huge change. In my subjective before/after comparison, the truck leans less in the turns.

Unfortunately, more front roll stiffness increases understeer and Luvs already understeer terribly. I compensated by:
a) adding springs in the back for more rear stiffness
b) raising the back and lowering the front (something us old farts from the 60s think is cool anyway)
c) playing with tire pressures. I currently have 34 in the front and 28 in the back.

With all that, the truck's handling could almost be called good.
