fellas,
Still a newbie with the love. Anyone know what would cause it to stutter when I'm pushing down abruptly on the throttle. And when I'm hard on her, she will back fire shifting gears....any ideas?????

the stutter has to do with your acceleration pump, you need to just re-built that part of the carburator and it'll accel. smoothly.

the back fireing is probably some fouled plug wires or spark plugs, not sure of which.

Unless it's a vacuum leak.

Post subject: it does need exhaust

it does have a leak in the exhaust below the header just as it bends to head back. The exhaust is basically all jacked up anyways. You say that could cause the backfiring? SO the stutter is coming from the acceleration pump???..how much does that run to get re-built?

we'll the parts to the accelerator pump are included in a carburator re-build kit you can get over in auto-zone. it helped alot with the luv we have in our back yard (it slung a rod cause some kid we loaned it to doesn't have a clue about driving a luv)
It's basiccally a new boot, o-ring and i think another peice for it, but the kit has instructions so it won't be too hard.

Btw where in NC do you live? I live in davidson county (wiston salem area)

Backfiring between shifts can be caused by the smog pump. Try pulling the belt to it off and seeing if it makes a difference. I believe you can also pull and plug the vacuum line to it and deactivate it as well. The line comes from the intake and goes over to a valve with a few large hoses going between it, the pump, and the air cleaner. I believe disconnecting it will prevent the valve from opening and effectively cut off the pump, but pulling the belt will make sure.

If that helps, it could be either the pump or that valve not working correctly. However, it also can be a sign of an over rich condition coming from the carb. The smog pump puts air into the exhaust to help any unburnt hydrocarbons to burn up on their way out. The backfire is a shot of unburnt fuel burning off in the exhaust system. No pump turning, no air/oxygen in the exhaust for that unburnt fuel to be able to go 'pop'. Finalman's comment on plugs/wires is a good thought too. If the ignition system has any problems, the motor may not be getting a good burn in the chamber, so some leftover fuel goes out the pipe. If you haven't done a tune up, I'd do at least new plugs and points and it should help. Robertcda's vac leak comment is also very good. Anytime a stock luv motor isn't running quite right, its a good bet there is a vac leak on it someplace. Even a good running truck probably leaks a little somewhere. Basically anything that could make it run a little off could contribute to making it dump enough fuel out the pipe to backfire.

Disclaimer: Mind you I'm not saying you should purposely disable any emission controls and leave them that way. That is technically against the law and I wouldn't want to advice anything of the sort.

Sry bud, with the price of diesel going up, me having to go to school everyday (i'm almost 17), and then driving to lexington somtimes with my GF i really don't have the spare change to drive around, and my parents really wouldn't want me too anyways.

The smog pump does sound like a cause, my buddy has a 85 Trans-Am that comes with one stock and he took it off cause it made the car back-fire every once in a while

Guys.... so I started this post with the hesitation and stuttering while driving. NOW, I start it up (idles perfectly) and try to take up and it will hesitate, stutter and then die???? However, if I quickly let off the throttle it will adjust itself back to idle. It's like a really bad sticky spot when accelerating  What gives?????

Sounds like it could be fuel starved. Clog of junk in the pickup line in the tank, fuel filter, bad/clogged fuel pump, junk in the lines, clogged screen where the line enters the carb, or crud somewhere in the carb. I just went through similar symptoms on my 79 when I got it back on the road after several years being down, though it was more of an every-so-often thing for me. Turned out that most of it was a dead yellow jacket stuck in the line between the tank and the fuel filter. I hate bees.
