evaporative charcole canister. It catches fuel vapors and releases them into the carb under vacume.

If you look on your fire wall on the right side, you'll see a little junction of black hoses. 1 goes to the oil pan,1 goes to the carb or manifold ( I can't remember now), and 1 goes to the black canister in the bed. That canister also has a couple lines going to the fuel tank. I don't know exactly how it works but it makes the fuel tank, and oil pan vent back into the engine combustion chamber to be burned rather than letting the fumes out into the environment.

How'd I do??? :D

That expansion chamber thing in the bed is to capture fuel fumes from the tank and make sure they don't get out as pollution. It also reclaims whatever condenses back to liquid back to the tank, so it has a useful purpose besides the environmental aspect. Rondog has it pretty much explained, no fumes get out to kill Condors or Whales and stuff.

The numbers on the side of the block (driver's side) will be G200 or G180. G180 is a stock LUV motor, 1.8L. A G200 is a 1.9L that is a little bit bigger, therefore a little more power. It would come out of something newer like an Isuzu pickup, trooper, car or some early Chev S10s. Apparently your truck has had the motor swapped at some point.

All of my newer trucks that I have had have this but my 84 pup (81 luv) doesn't. I have the bed off and put a fuel cell in place of the tank and never removed a charcole canaster in the vent system. Interesting?!
