ok so we went to an exhaust shop today to ask about prices for my truck...and according to some guy who worked there, even though my truck will have a 350 in it, because it's a '79 we have to have a catalytic converter on it. Is this true? GAHHHHH that makes me soooo angry.

also, he was quoting me under $200 to do it if I supplied the mufflers. is that a good estimate?

i say it's a good price, i got my muffler sys. (stock pipe till flowmaster then 2'' coming out to a 2 1/2'' tip) for $85... but it depends on what your wanting to put on yours, dual exhaust? what size pipe... how much pipe etc...

BTW you could just check w/ state laws to see if you need cat. conv.

If you tell them the truck will only be used for the track they'll probably install w/o the cat. If not i would go elsewhere. There are many shops out there that will do it. bryan

If you do some research I do believe there are high flow cats, that shouldn't hurt you too much. Actually I read in Hot Rod or similar mag, that they can improve performance.(except for the new vette)

Is your truck a California model? Because if it's Federal it didn't come with a cat in the first place. What would they do if you were having the stock exhaust replaced? Make you add a cat?

i think this is the reason i learned to weld in the first place......
that and making crossbows out of leaf springs in metal shop.....

now i'm just to lazy to do it myself.....

it not that hard to design your own exaust out of bends and pieces and having a friend or friend of a friend weld it for ya..... that way you get it exactly how you want it ...... all tucked in nice and neat.

This is a good reason to keep the under hood stickers on your truck, yours probably had a nice big one that said NON-CATALYST that would have shut them up. D is right, Stock federal emissions LUVs came with no cat. I can shoot you a picture of a 79 under hood sticker that shows that if it would help. Tell them to check into that a little better, because not everything in 79 came with a cat, specifically LUVs. ;) Can't get a fine for not replacing what was not there in the first place.

only if the truck is CA emmisions will it be a catalyst truck. If not all the way till 81 were run whith out cats.
And besideds your truck should be exemt (25+ years old), you dont have to worry about any of the emmisions control rubbish. 8)

Jess, I sent a picture from a 1980 that I already had taken to your email. I went through and snapped pics of a bunch of these stickers one time, the ones from a 79 didn't turn out though. I'll have to redo them all sometime. I was thinking about getting the stickers reproduced somewhere/somehow. The vac routing was the one I was thinking was handy, but the emissions info sticker would be handy to have to steer clear of DEQ testing issues and stuff like you are facing at the exhaust shop. The idea all started because my 79 has a hood and doors from a 77 on it, wrong stickers all over, and the door one even has another VIN# just to cause headaches someday.

yes I got it, thank you. That will definitely help.

lol your truck sounds confusing. I know my drivers door is off another truck but other than that I think it's all the same. I don't have a key to it, so I have to unlock it from the passenger side and then crawl through. lol I need to get that fixed!!!

thanks again
