Can someone tell me what years the Luv's came with the 12 bolt Isuzu rear end, the one with the removable third member? And what ratios they came with?

I've got a 88 Isuzu Trooper that's getting ready for a V8 engine swap and I need to find a 4.10 rear third member. I currently have a 4.56 ratio.

Anybody have one sitting in thier garage collecting dust?

Thanks,
Joe

LUVs only came with the 10 bolt Isuzu rear, which should be the same diff as is in the front of your 88. LUVs came with the same 10 bolt rear from 72 to 82, and Isuzus up to 86 also used the same axle in the rear. There are a few differences in the brakes, but the diff and gears should be interchangable through all the years. You should be able to get your front gears out of the rear of a LUV, but nothing for the rear 12 bolt.

Isuzu didn't start using the 12 bolt until mid 87. Check out http://www.independent4x.com/generic46.html for a lot of good info on what axles came in different Isuzus. Finding 4.10s for a 12 bolt might be a bit tough. I'm not sure what would have come with them. Most stuff was 4.56 unless it had the optional 4.77 gears. Probably the best bet would be a 2WD pickup, but I'm really not sure. Some of the pickups still had 10 bolts rears even up to around 90 or so, and I really don't know what gears came in them.

I'll have to scan my factory manual collection again to be sure, but from memory LUVs came with 4.10, 3.73, and 4.56 ratios, perhaps some others. About alL I can say for sure right now is don't trust the Haynes shop book on what the ratios are, different years did have different gears.

I believe the 88 and 89 Pups came with the 12 bolt. But finding one would be the problem. I have a hard enough time finding first gen troopers in the j-yards much less a Pup that only ranged for two years.

check the Rodeo's and Amigo's too, they have the same rear axle as the Trooper and Pup. i have no idea as to what ratios they had but, my guess would be to look for an early '90's Rodeo w/ the V6 and auto tranny.

on a side note, does any one know if you can swap the third member from a '86-'91 Trooper (Front 10 bolt) to the front end of a '80 LUV, or would I have to swap the whole front axle?

I thought the rodeo and passport rear ends were Dana 44's

Amigos can have a 'Zu 12 bolt, low end 2WD models had 10 bolts tho.

Rodeos either have GM Corporate 10 Bolts (91-92 all, 93-94 4cyls, drum brakes) or a Dana 44 (discs)

The link to independent4x in my previous post has specific info on what was in which rig. Their pickup info is sort of lacking(nothing on 2WD or pre-88), but what is there I'd bet is dead on accurate. I am pretty certain that pickups/PUPs would only have 'Zu 10 bolts or 12 bolts, not D44s or whatnot.

I did read about someone swapping a 10 bolt front into a trooper that came with an 8 bolt. I think it was at http://www.planetisuzoo.com in the forums there. It should be possible to put a 10 bolt into a LUV, but probably will need at least a little light fab work. I think the control arms are a bit different even on the 84-86 8 bolt troopers compared to a LUV.

but only for Rodeo's built after '98, before that they had isuzu axles. so pretty much 91-97 Rodeo's have either a 10 bolt Isuzu in the low end 2wd, or a 12 bolt in all the rest.

I'm not really up on Rodeo info, but I'm inclined to go with what independent4x's faq has. It shows Isuzu 10 bolt front IFS all through for the front, but nothing but GM Corporate 10 bolts or Dana44s for the rear on Rodeos. No 'Zu 12 bolts at all. Amigos used the 'Zu rear axle, but not the rodeo/passport.

I'm not trying to start a wizzing match here, like I said Rodeos are not my area really. I just trust indy4x and that is what I read there. :)

800xl is correct here. The first gen Rodeos up to 97 will have either the 12 bolt Isuzu Corp axle, or the D44 axle. The D44 started in 93 or 94.

Just some new info the 88, and 89 2wd Pup did have a 4.10 ratio 12 bolt axle. But, it must have disc brakes (one big hint it's a 12 bolt) and the leaf pack must only have 4 leaves. I have a 4.10 third on the way.

That's what you have to have, 88-89 2wd 4 leaves in the spring pack and disc brakes. If it has 5 leaves then it's a 4.30 gear. If it's 4wd then it's either a 4.30 or 4.56 gear.

Thanks for the help guys. I hope someone can use this info at a later time.

Joe

well, 800xl, you where right, i went back and checked my sources, and the Rodeo's do indeed have D44 rears, my mistake, i thought for sure that they had isuzu 12 bolts for the rear for all years. I guess i have another question that i'm going to have to find the answer to; What axles did the '92-'96 Troopers have, and then what axles did the '97-'02 Troopers have?

12 bolt

12 bolt and modified 12 bolt.

The cutoff I beleive is the 98 Trooper. The 98 and up has a modified 12 bolt rear and a modified 10 bolt front.

For those who have put a 12 bolt in their Luv, what types of modifications did you have to make? Does the brake line hose connect the the Luv's?
Thanks!
