Post subject: will a buick v8 work
PostPosted: Thu Jan 20, 2005 9:30 pm
i have a buick and a chevy v8 and i don't know witch one to put in my 78 luv. i have been looking online at hooker's web sit. they have kits for a buick v6 and a chevy v8 but not a buick v8 can i just get the chevy kit and run with that or do i have to make something. i want to use the buick because of the distributor is in the front making it easer to work on in the truck. any advice will help. also i have a real good carb for the 1.8 if some ones interested.

It would be best to go with the Chevy V-8 motor. The Buick V-8 motor is a little too long to fit the truck. The Chevy motor just fits with minimal mods to the firewall/trans tunnel with the harmonic balancer just clearing the forward crossmember. If you attempt to fit the Buick, the distributor/water pump/timing chain cover places the harmonic balancer about 3" farther forward from the motor than the Chevy. So the Buick would need a set of very custom mounts and major firewall/trans tunnel mods. I think highly of Buick motors and it would be pretty cool to see a Buick V-8/Luv conversion but overall, Chevy V-8's are a proven powerplant for the Luv and aftermarket parts are far more available than the Buick.

another reason to stick with the chevy, buick performance parts have riddiculous prices. a big block chevy would probably be cheaper than the buick also easier to get.
