Sounds like a sweet computer. I got a new computer too not too long ago. My old one was so crappy it wouldn't print, go on the internet half of the time, froze after a couple of minutes of "hard" use, and couldnt take any updated software, hardly any music, or games with its 4.7 gig harddrive. That thing was a peice. :x

Well honestly some of the stuff pretty overpriced .....but overall its not bad....

FX 5600 256MB AGP: found this for 89.00

1 Gig DDR PC3200 Lifetime Memory:103.00

160 gig serial ATA hardrive: 79.00

160 gig ide drive: 67.00

52x cd burner :27.00

Just bought my 12x dvd burner for 40.00 brand new from manucturer....

I actually build my own computers as well...... thats just to give you idea on price differences on some of the stuff......If you want to know where I got the prices from leave a message or something...

Good Luck Building them is great

Just a little info if you are going with XP as a OS.I would highly recommend XP professional instead of home edition...there is alot of things you cant do or configure with home edition that can really have a serious effect on the performance of the machine....

I've been out of the bleeding edge of this stuff for a while so I'm a little rusty on some of the details like video card models, etc. Only thing that really gives me much pause is the CPU/motherboard. I think I'd try to push the envelope there a bit more and get into something a little newer. The upgrade path on an AthlonXP motherboard pretty much runs out at about the 3200+ at best. I think I'd shoot for a little newer CPU family if it were me. I am one of those types that keeps upgrading a system though, so if you plan to just replace this one down the line instead of pushing parts of it forward with faster CPU/video/etc then worrying about upgrabability really doesn't pay for you like it might for me.

The pricing is a tad on the high side from what I see. I like shopping at http://www.newegg.com most of the time though, which is a case of getting a pile of parts to assemble. If this is a put together system then its a bit better of a deal. To be honest though, I just ordered a Dell for a client with a 2.8Ghz P4, 1/2 gig of RAM, 17 inch flat panel monitor, and 80gig HD for just under $1k and that is before the $150 mail in rebate. You won't find AMD based stuff there, but they do make quite a good base system if you can like an Intel machine. Add one video card to the Dimension system I was talking about and you'd have a nice home gaming system. No, it won't overclock, but the price of CPU is down there where you don't so much need to any more.

i have a dell laptop, what im typing on now as a matter of a fact, and i do like it. but one of the reasons im going w/ a built computer is i dont want the wife to have to deal w/ all the unnecessary bullshit that comes on dell computers. i had to remove probaly 1/2 the programs on this when i got it :x

i looked at the dimension desktops but the one i liked (the 8400 i think it was) had way to much "junk" like 5 built in card readers...what the hell would i ever use those for?

i did have the guy upgrade the motherboard to on a little better and add a bigger PSU.

as for the prices around my area they are pretty comparable to other shops and this will help a local busniess ....

I hear ya on the local business thing. I have spent quite a bit over the years in local shops. Sure it helps out my local economy and all that, but I figure if I want any shops to go hang out in and look at toys I better give them at least a bit of my money. :)

I think the model we ended up with was a Dimension 4700, not much for video card options from dell, but that is an easy upgrade. You have to watch on some of their system though, no AGP or PCIe video card slot limits the possibilities. You do have to spend some time clearing out their support crap and such, but it is better than it used to be. At least they let you specify no preinstalled AOL ISP crap now.
