Well I can't say I approve of HolyLUV's abuse of an Isuzu like that, but I do have a story about a Volvo. My dad bought it at an auction for $75 and it had a wonder pea green shade of rattle can paint on it. Two door, automatic, 4cyl with dual sidedraft strombergs, mid 70s I believe. Dad though so much of it he actually let me work on it before he even touched it. I dumped some gas down the carbs and got it to fire up but it ran really rough. I started pulling plug wires and eventually found two dead cylinders. After some head scratching, I swapped those two wires at the cap and it smoothed right out and started hitting on all four holes. After that, it got quite a few "field tests". By that I mean I took it out in the pasture, over the hill out of sight of the house, and cut a few hundred cookies with it. I also took it through the wooded area of the farm trying hard to get it stuck, but I never ended up doing any noticable damage to it. My parents came home just as I was finishing washing the mud off it one time.

From the start it had a fairly bad bottom end knock, but it never did quit. Dad finally sold it for $200 more than he paid for it, and he never did really do any work to it.

Sorry 800XL! I just couldn't resist! That Trooper and I had a love/hate relationship! I NEVER could get that thing to run like it ought to! My $330 good deal cost me $1500 when I finally had enough! Traded it at a pre-owned lot and got $475 only because I bought a $17,500 car! The sales rep told me actual wholesale value was listed at $1! Seriously!! But I'd love to get another Trooper, except this time with a GM 2.8 V-6!! I apologize to anyone who says I shouldn't have abused an Isuzu, but to it's credit it didn't get hurt in all the abuse we dished out upon it!!! It's flaws were as a result of the previous owner's neglect!!

But unfortunately the problem is the 2.8 v6 has more problems than advantages.Have had one of them and it was a constant headache and moneypit.. :(

As a trooper owner I just had to make some comment about that HolyLUV. ;) I know they will hold up to a lot of abuse. I need to find where I can buy them for $1 though, I could use a few of those deals. :P

The 2.8L used in troopers is at least the throttle body injected version. They are not know for their power or lack of problems, but you can do quite a bit to change that. 4.3L throttle body, intake bored to match, you can swap a crate 3.4L motor in its place without much fuss, and rebuild parts are a lot easier to come by than for an Isuzu 4cyl. On a purely HP level though, the 2.6L 4cyl and 2.8L V6 used in troopers are both rated at 120HP. In stock form the V6 gets you a tad more torque and a fair chunk less gas mileage.

Don't quote me on this but I think the 2.8 can be swapped for a 4.3. That would be a nice Trooper to have!!! If you look at 2.8 & 4.3 S-10's, they look identical! Wiring looks the same, and I think it's the same tranny!! Based on that I beleive a 4.3 can be put in the older Troopers! But I understand your comments, 800XL! I'd do the same thing if anyone told me they've misused and abused a Caprice!!! Although I really punished the 1989 Caprice I had!! We played Dukes of Hazzard on a regular basis in that boat!! Always peeling out and power-braking, fish-tailing around turns on and off the pavement, straightening the curves and flattening the hills!! In fact, the same buddy of mine was with me most of the time we were tearing up the Caprice was around for the abusing of the Trooper!! I sold the Caprice with 226K on it and the original 305 V-8 still ran like new!!! Gotta love a small block!! That Trooper would have been a great truck if it weren't for the previous owner running it without oil till it stopped!!! Duh-Huh!!! We tested the motor and only found cylinder head problems but we missed some things!!! Like worn out piston rings!! I really should have put a motor in that thing!! I just didn't have $2300 for a 2.6 long block, but I had $450 for a head and gasket set!!

I think the 2.8 to 4.3 swap is quite a bit more complex than going to a 3.4 with at least regards to the wiring. The engine computer in a 2.8L trooper will run a 3.4L motor without any mods, and will even keep up with the 4.3L injectors. The 4.3L would require some computer creativity or a swap of the ECU to one built to run a 4.3L. Still it is very doable. Someplace I saw a list of the motors you could bolt up to a 2.8L trans and it includes 3.4s, 3800s, and some of the bigger Caddilac Norstar motors. Getting a trooper with a 2.8L V6 isn't so much about what it has in it, it is about what you could put in it. You can only take a 4cyl so far. I think a 3.4L crate motor would cost a little more than half what you quoted for a 2.6L 4cyl longblock.

I also got a chance to scare the hell out of a guy in his Eagle Talon once. He talked about how fast it would go, so when he let me drive it I had to check that out of course. Little did I know he hadn't really gotten it up there that fast, so he got a little upset when we were flying along faster that he'd ever gone in his own car.

Worst thing I've ever done were in customers cars! I'm sorry to admit it, but as an auto mechanic in a wealthy part of North Carolina, I get to drive some NICE cars! Beat the piss out of an 02 Camaro SS!! Doing donuts and fish-tailing it around corners!!! Ended up doing 90 in a 45 before I knew what hit me!!! I've got a lot of stories about dogging my customers cars!!!!

yeah, i have too.. when the Navy sent me up to Washington for a school, they hooked me up with a rental and I ended up with the new PT Cruiser GT with the turbo. Me and a galpal from my high school days decided to see if it was a fast and tough as they say. Running up highway 16 from the Narrows, we had it way over 120 damned quick and then op checked the brakes. hit them as hard as i could and the anti skid worked until we got under 65, then we had a nice slide that started at about 60. then we headed into a little town just outside Port Orchard and checked the off road abilities on her bit of land there. Caved in a few small things underneath and high centered it once. Bent the lip on a rim but it still drove and ran fine. After that it was just more of the same for the whole week. btw, you can get one airborne going under a 100.. he he

Cool Ben, I was going to reply to doggone but figured he wasn't worth it and now he is doggone!!! Anyway me and my buddy back after high school we worked at an Amoco station, we were the closest station to downtown where the company cars were so our station was responsible for maintenencing the cars. Me and my buddy were always the ones to take them back to corporate. Of course we would always see who could get there the fastest. Well he was ahead of me one time and got caught out in the middle of an intersection downtown when the light changed. He put it in reverse and backed out of the intersection as I had left him some room. Well the dummy must have had the radio cranked as I didn't see the reverse lights shut off. I was honking and waving like crazy but he wasn't paying attention. I knew as soon as the light turned green he was going to smash the pedal. Well the light turned green and I braced for impact, but luckily he got to the brakes just inches before running into me!! Man we both would have been fired on the spot!!! But we continued racing to the underground parking garage, man that is fun squealing around the corners in parking garages!!
