Today i ran into a slight problem, my driveshaft fell out. The rear u-joint gave out. My question is, is that a bear cat to redo. I've never messed with u-joints before. I did look at it and i took the two clips out of the driveshaft end. Does the yoke thinger just pull out of the rearend? I didnt get a chance to try to pull it out or look at the yoke on the rear yet cause it was too dam cold. Any help to educate me would be great. Thanks guys

the yoke unbolts with four 12 mm bolts. the best tool for putting u-joints in is a good c-clamp.

put some grease in the caps to hold the bearings in and hold the joint where it goes and slowly press the caps into the housing......

don't use the 1/2" long grease fitting....it just gets in the way of the joints rotation. grease the piss out of the body, then fill up the caps and plug off the grease fitting.

Here is what the book says about this... (long) illustrations will follow...
Disassembly
1. Remove the snap rings by using pliers. If the smap ring is stuckin position, remove paint from the hole in the yoke or tap around the edge of the bearing lightly with a mallet.

2. Hold the universal joints with one hand and tap the yoke lightly with a mallet or a copper hammer. fig 4-12

3. As the yoke is tapped, the needle roller bearing cap comes out gradually, permitting easy removal with hand, as shown in Fis 4-13.

Reassembly
1. Apply molybdenum-disulfide grease to the bearing cap inner surface. Install the needle rollers, then install the oil seal.

2. Assemble the spider to the yoke and then inser the needle roller bearing cap into the hole by using a wood block and a hammer or a press as in Fig 4-16

3. When the bearing cap is in position, select and install snap rigs of suitable thickness so that the end play of the spider pin is held withing .004 inch.
a. Install a .059 inch snap ring inn the groove on one end.
b. Select the tickest snap ring wich can be fitted into the groove at the other end. Snap rings are avaiable in .057, .059 and .061 inch.

4. Repeat the same procedure to reassemble the spider on the other end.

I left out the section on Inspection. Let me know if you want that.
Here are the drawings...might need to make the image box bigger when it pops up to be legible...

After the snap rings are out on both sides, it takes a press usually to drive a cap out, cuz they're so tight. I use a vise with a small socket on one side for driving the cap out and a big socket on the other to catch the cap.

There some caps available now with a grease fittings. Not all sizes, tho. I got one in my front shaft when it was rebuilt this summer.
