"Can't" and Haven't or Didn't are two different things. No one said "can't". It depends on how you drive it and what you have behind it too...
My buddy had a vega with a 327 and bounced the driveline off the road and
came about an inch away from impaling his leg. But that doesn't mean everyone with a 327 is going to break their driveshaft.

I'm sorry, but let me get this straight; 72 full size pick up? (chevy/ford, doesn't matter) short bed? long bed? doesn't matter either. Stock trans? 350/400 Turbo? Stock convertor? Stock rearend-non posi? Your saying that this set up would pull the front wheels off the ground shifting into 2nd gear? Is that correct? I read one of your other postings and notcied that you are a young man, so I thought I would be polite, but; I'm sorry dude, not gonna happen. To pull the wheels off the ground in a full size truck (or any car) takes some serious torque/HP, to get serious torque/HP you need a pretty good cam/head/etc combination-that's not the hard part. But to put that kind of power through a stock torque convertor that engages around 800-1000 rpm your not going to be even getting into the powerband of the motor. Then the stock trans will not take that kind of power even if you did have a high stall convertor, not to mention the drive line. Then we have the stock rearend-non posi, let's say we did transfer the kind of power needed through the stock convertor/trans/driveline to the stock non posi rearend- to get the kind of traction to pull the front end off the ground in second gear in a full size pickup not tubbed, stock or oversize tires (slick(s)) it would send the truck straight into the wall.
Now in your young mind, it probably 'feels' like the front end is coming up, overly soft/worn suspension, the front end raises up just like all vehicles that are not properly set up, etc. I'm sorry Dr. LUV it just isn't happening for me. If I'm wrong, I'll eat my words, but there is no way a stock trans/driveline/non-posi rearend equipped truck or car for that matter is going to pull the wheels off the ground when shifting into second.

dang jw .you sound like me........I read that and kinda gulped myself, but I have been letting bros have their ways until it just gets outta hand.....u r right,...the only thing that might do it..might..would be a bunch of nos dropped on it with a decent tire ,but that usually makes you lose traction and go sideways.......you read all kinds of stuff bro,i was in a site this morning where a dude with a 383=no juice, blower etc said his camaro went 6.50s a in the1/4at over 200 mph.......i fell off the chair.....400hp 383..my gawd..after a few mods questioned him,it was edited and deleted.....I am not sure why bros do it,.....maybe to feel big or something......anyone want some chocolate chips cookies and milk.......home made just out mamas oven..yum yum

I have a pretty powerful engine, and I have a shift kit, and I also have a Ford Rear end, and I have not been able to break nothing but a BAD
U-joint. It is pretty hard to belive a "one wheel wonder" will raise the Front tires on the 2nd gear, that is Amazing, I give a Dang what motor it is

How do I tell the difference between 305 and 350? Block casting number the only way?

In all my years of bending wrenches , stretching gears etc.....that is THE only way i have been able to tell.
If anyone else knows anything otherwise, hopefully they will come along and share the wealth.kinda curious about this myself, as i deal w alot of these engines  8)

You could measure the bore of one of the cylinders. 350 = 4.000" and the 305 = 3.740. Those are stock numbers though...

Check this site for all kinds of info on specs, casting #'s etc...MorTech

305's are not boat anchors. W/ the "normal" performance mods, they are great performers. Sure a 350 will outrun it when both are built similarly, but if you're worried about having the fastest thing around, ya better get a 502 crate motor & go from there. 305's are plentiful & cheap. An RV cam, dual plane intake, a good carb & headers w/ dual exhaust will give you a reliable engine that is still capable of pulling near 20 mpg on the highway. And in a lite little LUV, it'll be lots of fun. :D

Lol, thanks for the replies guys.. Perhaps you could tell me where the casting numbers are going to be located? I've heard that you've got to take brackets off the block to find the number under one of them?

Got here a little late for this conversation but
1. yes you can pull the front end off the ground with a stock rig
just tweak the suspension a lot and add weight behind the wheels. He said he could do it now that it was drivable

2 a shift kit is a good thing for a auto trans
if your trans builder is good he can adjust the pressure for it won’t hit so hard and break the tires loose

3 a luv can do 150+ with the stock suspension and still pull 10s in the quarter

4 But tell you the truth I had more fun with the 350 stock that I do 20 grand later
383 with 987 HP 1035 T blowen dyno tested 09/21/04

that is it for now just had to put my 2 cents in
