i got my backup lights working today for the first time in 10 yrs.... the alt light shines faintly when i have the truck in reverse....it comes on like that when i have the heater on also..

i tested the regulator and i have 13.9 volts at the fuse box with the battery disconected and the engine running..i can't get a good reading from the alt for amperage..... is there any thing besides the alt being bad that will cause the light to come on?

i wouldn't worry about the alt light if it is just on faintly. My truck has been like that with the heater or my overheads on for the whole 2 yrs ive had it now.Checked it out from stem to stern and im not losing power anywhere.
bottom line.....if it aint broke, don't fix it  8)

You might try making sure all your main gound wires on the truck have a good contact. My 76 does the same thing. I have just been either too lazy or too busy to look in to it. 8)

Other than that sounds like everything works like its supposed to, so not sure what else could be going on. Maybe someone will chime in with some other ideas...

Well, like alot of luv owners, I to have the alt light come on when I turn my lights on, and when I use my left blinker, the right light [blinker on dash] flashes, and visa versa. WTF

3 things: bad grounds, bad fuse block, old wiring. You have to keep in mind that Isuzu didn't design these trucks to last for 30-some odd years. The fuse block has to be the biggest problem. Early year trucks had a fuse block that needed rethinking. I had a spare one that i got years ago and i installed it a few years back. And its been modified to handle wiring upgrades. Bad grounds are a problem with just about any vehicles electrical system. Many overlook the double ground lead at the battery. It should have a seperate lead to the frame for grounding along with the big gage cable to the block. Wiring degrades at the ground ends and it doesn't help matters when the harness wiring is of a small gage to start with.
One thing i noticed was when i upgraded the headlight wiring, I isolated the new power wiring and ground wiring from the stock harness and the faint alt light was gone. I thing just by cleaning or replacing ground terminal ends will clear up alot of problems you may now have.

I would like to add that there is NO ground connected under the dash. You may want to try splicing into the ground wires that run inside the dash and grounding it to the metal dash.

THIS is an excellent tip on wiring, and funny thing is....i just did exactly that myself today, as i am putting finshing touches on my 79 long bed auto LUV, and a few things didn't wanna work right at 1st, soon as i did this, viola!!!!!! Everything in the dash came to life again :!: :D

this sounds like another whole weekend worth of work to me...... .....replace the body to frame ground, frame to batt and engine to batt.

did i miss anything?

Since they make the light come on, should I ground the body of the blower motor and chase the ground for my backup lights to common and ground that to body?

On another note......Has anybody ever seen a solid state voltage regulator for the luv?

Ditch the OEM alternater & external regulator for a GM one with the regulator built if you get the chance. I did that on mine and the lights shine brighter than ever now and never had any problems since.

BTW I pulled the bulb in the idiot light.

update........i went to town today and got a new alt.....50 amp for the 4wd w/AC.... the light went out completely..... it turns out that my alt was supplying the necessary voltage, but was putting out only 4 amps....

this new alt fixed the light as well as the lagging from my ignition (not enough juice for E.I.)

as for cost.... well i got it at kragen(shucks, checker, etc) for $39.99 plus a $10 core.

i've asked as well as a few others about the bigger alt's compatability....it went right in in 5 minutes the mounts were identical as well as the connections.

damn.....thanks Ben... i love this spell check :D
