bcg187 is correct. If your truck has a smog pump, thats the first thing to look at. Cut the belt. most of the time the backfiring stops.

AFAIK, you can't get the dist 180 out on one of these without tearing down the motor and putting the gear that drives the dist/oil pump in wrong. The distributor shaft itself is keyed one way when you pull it out. It will only go back in the same way. I suppose you could twist the body of the distibutor clear around, but that would be visibily obvious.

If the vacuum advance is pointing to the rear of the truck, the distributor is in right. (tho who knows if the motor wasn't assembled wrong) I fussed and worried over this the first time I pulled out my distributor, but once I got it out I could see how impossible it was to get it back in wrong. The shaft only fits in right.

my engine is backfiring pretty bad outa the carby when i try and start it, its an auto choke but not connected, used to have a manual choke so i duno how to connect it, any ideas, ive checked vacuum lines, wat is that thing that bolts to the inlet manifold? it has a spot for a vacuum line by the looks of it, duno where it goes tho :S
