I got the truck fired up for the first time today with the new head. It idled real crappy for about a minute, then died, I can't get it to stay running longer than three seconds at a time so I can't hold in the clutch and feather the gas, then run to the front of the truck to play with the throttle under the hood before it dies. Is there a way to set it up so you can start it under the hood? Like my old ford you could bridge the solenoid with some plyers? Something easy? I don't have any help with this, and now I've heard her run I want to get it going. Thanks.

Make or buy a remote starter button that connects to the + battery post and the starter solenoid. (The small post) With the ignition switch on, you can crank the engine while standing beside the engine compartment.

get somthing heavy to push in the clutch and tape the trotel back a little ways then start it as quick as you can and take it out of gear and set the e- break ,get to that hood. I dont know if it will work but its worth a try.

Simply put the truck in nuetral, turn on the key, then go to the pasenger side w a fairly long screw-driver and cross your starter, right where the battery cable is to the other little peg there on there on starter.
I do this all the time w these trucks cause most i have don't have any keys 8O

are you getting this thing running w/ the new dist? set the timing pointer to 6 degrees on the crank and look at the dist pickup.... make the magnet and the trip point line up then tigten the dist down.... put the cap and wires back on and then try to start it. if it still dont idle turn the screw up a little and try again,do it tilll it runs.if this doesn't work make sure the wires are in proper sequence. i've screwed up my firing order way too many times to call my self a mechanic.

BTW did you have any problems hooking up that ignition module?

MY way works just fine W/O spending $40 to $125 for a remote starter. Now I could understand getting one for some complicated NEW p.o.s. car, but anybody that can't cross a starter on a Luv w a screw-driver to crank it up....aint much of a mechanic in my book :!:

******Bad ,bad fingers****** :D

Jumping the starter solenoid with a screw driver is a way to crank the engine. BUT, you take the chance of doing a little are welding on the stud and nut, and maybe screwing them up.

i've had to replace a whole starter/solinoid set due to cheap manifacuring on the leads out of the solinoid before.... those litle riveted tabs are the worst thing the enginers in japan ever thought of.

This is true...I cannot argue w that.
But you have to REALLY try hard before you mess up those bolts, but then I forgot who started this post, 8O and with HIS luck he would succeed.I will shut up and leave this one alone. :D 8)

Drive forward to the next window please

A remote starter switch is just a momentary on push button switch you can buy at Radio Shack, a couple of 6 foot 12 gauge wires bought at Home Depot, and a couple of alligator clips. ( Roach clips to you younguns.)

I've shorted the starter a time or two on my luvs and so far been lucky and done no harm. Tho one time I was reaching under the intake and shorted across the contacts with my watch, that was exciting. Now I know why those shop manuals always talk about disconnecting the battery before do some of that stuff. ;)

You could try cranking up the idle a bit and see if you can get it to stay running long enough for you to get around to the carb and keep it going yourself. I think ctmandu might be on to something tho, check all them hoses and ports on the intake and see if you got them hooked up or capped off.
