Ok, another stupid question from the newb.
What vehicles out there came from the factory with a 350 sbc? And considering I've been told that any small block is basically interchangable, is a 350 the best deal for power and performance? I'm rather broke most of the time, so I'm not looking for an LS1 or anything, just a healthy carb ready engine. I've got a good supplier down here as long as I know what car or truck has the engine I want. I'm trying to build a street machine, not a drag truck, so I'm also looking into a 6 speed manual and looking at a trans am rear end. I've been told that the gear ratios in this combo could theoretically get the truck up past 150mph if I get the suspension right. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for tiring your eyes on the long winded inquiry.
Jess

6 speed tranmissions are traditionally expensive, unless you get lucky.

well 350's are good on power and performance I like them alot. if you want power go with a 350 4bolt main with and put a 400 crank in it. its called a 383 stroker very nice if you do that thei are some other things you need to know...
skrew in studs are a must
hevy dutie comp springs
hevy dutie rollor rockers
a comp cam with a adu duration 274 286 duration .050: 230 236 lobe seperation of 110.0 valve lift .490 .490 (strait off the box)(have to have new lifters)
.001 lift on the valves
400 rods and 383 stroker pistins
turn 400 crank 200thousands
high vol. oil pump
dont put a shift kit in or you will break alot of stuff

hey darc
you can get 350's out of alot of vehicles.
most 73-86 full size chevrolet trucks. beware though some came with 305's, so stay away from those.....anchors for sure.
chevelles, camaros....
if you are looking for tune port engine there is a guy down here that parts out camaros and firebirds. you could get the entire engine/tranny/rear for under $2000.
if you are looking for a 6 speed plan on paying upwards of around $1000 for one unless you find one from an induvidual just looking to unload.
The LT1 6 speeds should bolt up to any small block chevrolet although im not 100% sure about that.
NOTHING from a LS1 will bolt up to a traditional small block chevrolet.

hope this was helpful.

after reading your post I wanted to add that buick skyhawks and monzas with the buick 3.8 liter came with a borg warner transmission 5 speed. although they don't hold up to harsh driving at all they can be picked up rather cheaply from a junk yard or something. I ran one in the truck you have behind a 3.8 buick V6 for many years and it is still on the road today.

what is wrong with the engine you have now?

Yes actually I do have bigger and better drivetrain components than stock.

Hey there,
The Engine I have now is actually being used. The wife decided to take the old clunker that this one was supposed to replace. We're going to fix them both up now, but that leaves me short one drivetrain. She's lifting hers 3" and putting mudders on it, I'm going the street route. Remember that Pull-a-part place I told you about? Any v8 is less than 200 and any tranny is 42. Seriously, If I had access to a shipping company, I'd be on ebay so fast... Anywho, I'll look at the trucks for the engine and trans am/camaro for the tranny.. Might have to live with a 5 speed though. Thank you for all your help guys, I'll look into it.
Jess
