At the risk of rehashing old topics, I'd like to ask where I can find out what I need to do to swap my knockin' and tired 1.8 for a Toyota 20r or 22r drive train. I have a 78 Luv sitting in my backyard I need to either sell or get running again. I don't want to spend a lot of money. (By the way, I'm new here and not much of a mechanic--so be gentle!).

first.....welcome to the site.

pull up a bucket and grab a beer :drinking:

second....i know it can be done. there used to be a guy from LA on here that had i think it was a toy 20r in his luv. ChevyToyR was his screenname so you may want to do a search of his posts for some info. and here is pics of his truck and engine http://www.luvtruck.com/Gallery/Nelsons ... index.html

hope this helps 8)

ok just from wht i have seen the motor mounts and every thing is really close to a stock luv and the motors are plumed just about the same if you goto a "wrecking yard" and do some measureing you will see how close they are and you can go form there. i hope that helps because there are alot more performance options for the 22r and 20r so best of luck.

Welcome :D

Even though they may be "close", fab skills will still be required.

Good luck :D

I heard someone say once that the luv body mounts will bolt up to the body mounts on a toyota of camparable dates. I think just switching the body over would be easier than the fabricating. And you'll have alot more build-up options with a toy frame than the luv frame if you're into 4 wheelin.

i don't think it's true myself. could be close but i don't think it's gonna be exact since it's 2 different companies

i wouldn't mind a toy powered luv, there's all kinds of aftermarket parts available and even a stock toy engine has a lot more grunt than a luv motor :D

I can't say if it's true or not either, but I read it on here. It was one of those heard someone who heard someone who said it. But it would be cool. Might definately be worth researching if someone's serious.

Ok, so this got my gears turning enough to grab my tape measure and head down to the salvage yard today and it looks like hogwash to me. I compared a 79 Luv to a 79 Toyota body mount locations and they will certainly not bolt right up. Whoever said that must have been on crack. Too bad for us :(

Hey guys, just want to thank ya'll for the replies. I've located a 20r engine and a 5 speed tranny for $350. Don't know if that's a great value, but seems ok to me. There's a welder in our very small town here who says he'd do the fabbin for me if I want. Like I said, I need to either get it on the road, or sell it. :D

that's not too bad of a deal. what's the engine/tranny out of? truck, celica or a corona?

i paid $175 for a core 22R motor and $250 for a t-case and tranny

Update..

I now have an 82 Toyota 4x4 and a 75 Luv in my yard waiting for me to fuse them together  . After taking a closer look, it seems like the front body mounts will be very close but the rear 2 mounts will need to be moved forward about 8" or so. The distance from the front body mount to the firewall is almost identical and as far as the overall wheelbase, the Luv is longer by about 5/8 of an inch. I probably won't be ready to start for a couple months or so but when I do, I'll start a buildup thread so anyone interested can follow along. :)
