I have been watching this 1980 4x4 Luv for a while and he has finally brought the price to a reasonable standpoint. I was wondering if there are some little things such as small problems that are common to watch out for. Or things that i can look for to talk him down in price.

Any input is welcome!

Anything that looks like a coolant/water leak would help. Heater core, heater control valve, old crusty looking hoses. Coolant leaks can turn into head gasket problems in a hurry, so you can talk a small green drip into a few hundred dollars of repairs. Wet floors (if its the rainy season, signs of it prior if not) are also a nice one. Its either heater core (see above) or its water leaking in around windshield. Rusted out floor boards are a big fix, replacement windshield/gasket also a big dollar item. Usually the truth is that it is just leaking around the wiper shafts, and that is an easy fix.

Basic used car buying tactics boil down to look for any faults, and make them seem really important to you. Important to you can mean expensive to fix or just "something you're looking to avoid". For example, car tires (anything with a size starting in P, like P195-75R14, or just a non-aggressive tread) on a 4x4 could be a knock to the value if you mention you'll have to shell out $$$S to put some all terrain tires on it.

My adivise is this.....
MOST definetly take it out somewhere and run it thru all gears 2wd to 4x4, use 4low and high, and check it out good.
Luvs have a thing about when 4x4 has been used and abused of lock out hubs getting hot, and/or not wanting to UNlock 8O
Also, i have personally over many years shelled out 3 transfer cases in Luvs.they have a tendency to pop out of gear in 4 high around 35 mph, if there is major wear and tear......so look it over REAL good, don't be afraid to drive it :D
