hey, today when i was attempting to drive up a steep hill, i had the same problem three times in a row. im driving up the hill at about 25 mph, in 2nd gear, so at a decent rpm, then all of a sudden it feels like the engine totally lost power, and i had to back down the hill and try it again. the same thing happened the second time, so i tried it a third time after waiting a while for the engine to warm up. the third time my truck made it to the top, but then felt like it lost power again, and then the engine stalled. whats going on?? at first i thought it might be the transmission slipping out of gear, but i checked the second and third time, and it was in gear. also, my truck has very little wear and tear on it, because only has 21k miles, so i doubt it is the clutch, and if it was, a slipping clutch wouldnt cause the engine to stall... any ideas? :?:

Maybe a weak fuel pump......
I had that prob w a Luv yrs ago while traveling across Arkansas. On flat road it would move along 70 , 80 mph, start up a hill and it would cut down to 10 mph by time i reached the top. 8O Drove it clear up into Missouri like that, trying to figure out the prob along the way, stopping to blow out the fuel filter a couple times, but it was okay. Installed new fuel pump in Missouri and by-passed that stupid relay, wired to a toggle switch and it ran like a champ from then on.

I would check out the fuel pump, the relay and the fuel filter, could be any or all of the above.

Yeah... what he said :silly:

while you're checking things open up the fuel pump and see if that filter is toast. most of em are.........mine was ........if it is disconest the fuel lines at the carb and blow some compressed air through the lines back through the fuel pump. put an inline filter before the pump and chuck the old filter that was in it.

How was your gas? Maybe when you angle upward it causes the fuel to settle and the "new" low point away from the pick-up tube? This only works if your were almost on embty though, if not, ignore me.

I go four wheeling a lot and this is a problem with that most stock carbrators have. You need to adjust the float in the carbrator. When you get on an incline it does not wotk right and cuts off the fuel supply. try slightly bending the float arm a little one way or another.

yeah im thinking of replacing the carb anyways, how much of a power increase do you get when you add a performance carb?

quiet a bit i'm told, the carb your going to be looking for is either a Weber 32/36 DGEV or if you'll look on http://www.carbs.net, they show a Weber 38 DGEV as a high performance model, I know the 32/36 is one of the most popular upgrades for Luv's with the stock engine. I don't know a thing about the 38 though, weber says it's for performance engines or something like that. on a side note if any one on this site has used one of these on their LUV, let me know because i'm looking into it, if not the 38 then for sure the 32/36.

I would recommend checking your fuel pump pressure and filter before throw parts at it, should the fuel system meet specs, turn to the ignition
next and verify the coil, wire, cap and plugs.
Good luck Fitzworld

I've had two webers in use. One that I just recently started using again is a 32/32 progressive. Just like a 32/36 only with a secondary the same size as the primary. The other is a 32/36. The 32/32 even though smaller that the typical LUV weber still makes enough extra power to notice it through the "seat of the pants" method. The 32/36 gave a bit more yet, tho I need to rebuild mine before I put it back in use. When I had it on my 79 it leaked from more than one spot, so a fresh one would no doubt perform better. I don't have numbers, but to notice more acceleration with dyno tests takes more than just a couple hp extra. I'd say my "pants dyno" is probably tuned into my truck enough to feel 5hp or greater gains, so its at least in that range. I'd expect 10% gain or a bit more from a weber alone, maybe upwards of 20% for a weber/header/cam combo.

I've gone through a few fuel pumps and found the symptoms to be about the same as described above. If you accelerate gradually, you will eventually hit a point where the motor dies off a little if you try to go any faster. (For me usually ~80MPH) If you run in a lower gear for a longer time, you hit the same sort of speed barrier. If you floor it through the gears you can get to about the shift from 3rd to 4th before the carb bowl runs dry and it falls flat for a few seconds as the pump tries to catch up. If I see anything like this, I put on a new filter and see if that helps, then check the pump volume and pressure. If it is dumping a trickle or the PSI is way low (I *think* around 5psi is normal, so 1-2 is obviously bad) then I go for the pump replacement. From what I recall (last one was about 5 years ago) the PSI will be very low to none if its bad and I don't think I ever tested a brand new pump.

Well thanks guys for all of the input, even thought this post was originally Adem's, i'll look into the fuelpump thing, i'll check my filter too, but i'm pretty sure thats not it. oh and Fritzworld, I know that the carb may not be the whole problem but, I'm gonna get the weber anyway because i want mo power , well first i need to get a weber and then pick up a header, which i know isn't too difficult, as for the cam, mmmmmm will have to wait and see how much delta wants for regrinding mine. well laters all
