I have a question about changing the rod bearings on a inline 250 6 cyl engine. Can it be done without taking the engine out of the car :? . and also can I change the piston rings without taking the engine out of the car

If the motor is jacked up enough to where there's enough room to remove the pan, then yes, you can replace the bearings. You also may need to rotate the crankshaft to where the crank throws are out of the way to clear the pan. But if you're needing to replace the rings, you might as well go the distance and rebuild the motor. There's a good possibility that the top of the cylinder will have a ridge to it and you'll use a ridge reamer to eliminate it. Even if you are successful in replacing the rings and bearings, the top end will wear out very fast because the lower end is much fresher. If the rings and bearings are worn, the timing chain will be as worn as the rest of the motor. It might take longer and cost more to do but in the long run, it will be better overall. It's easier to get it worked on correctly than it would be with the block still in the vehicle.

I was hoping that is all I had to do, I have 2 head gaskets coming so I can just push the piston up out of the block to put the rings on huh after taking off the con rod bolts. Should I get a new cam for it and timing gears, I think it is just gears isnt it and not a chain. HELP, I dont have a book yet, I just need insight. Thanks, Shane

You don't want to do all that with the engine still in the car. Like Blue Meanie said, make it easy on yourself, get the motor out of the car and do it right and change everything. You'll be glad you did later. Just my 2 cents

Yeah I know, but I live in an apartment and resources are a little limited, I have to take it to my mother in laws pad to take the engine out 8O.
