Hi ... I just started working on my 80 luv. I just painted the outside and now am trying to remove door panels so i can paint them. Any
help on how to remove the window handles? I tried prying them with a flathead but they seem not to want to budge.

Also...any suggestions for cold starts(even in the summer)?

Pictures are on the way....

easiest way to remove the handles is slide a flathead screwdriver behind the handle...there is a little C clip there that holds the handle to the crank...they make a tool that is easier to use than the screwdriver, should be able to pick one up at autozone or napa fairly cheap...

btw...welcome to the site..

pull up a bucket and grab a beer :drinking:

I've seen two different kinds of clips on them, but both can be removed pretty easily. I just get a piece of stiff, small diameter wire and bend the end
into a hook. kinda like a home-made slimjim for window cranks...

Once you've taken a few of them off it gets to be pretty easy, I use a scribe with a hook end on it. Putting them back on is a challenge if you do it the hard way. I did that the first couple times. Then I figured out as noyz said, just put the clip on the handle the way it is supposed to sit installed, put the handle on the shaft, maybe with a light tap, and the clip catches right where it is supposed to. You shouldn't have to hang onto the clip at all or even touch it when you are putting the handle back on.

I felt like I was tearing up the door panel so

About the cold startup... Castrol GTX makes a new type of oil thats ment to help startups in the morning and keep your LUV in good condition on the inside. You might want to check it out. If you do, write me back and tell me if it helped. I might be interested

I'v found that some of the best stuff to use, oil wise, is Castrol GTX Syntec 4x4 formula, the 15w40w variety seems to work pretty good here in AZ. oh and with oil filters DO NOT GET FRAM!!!!!!!! i'v had problems with them making my oil pressure drop, and i know i'm not the only to have this problem with the. be good to the Luv and go to AutoZone or where ever and get a K&N, they're a little more expensive but they are well worth it. as to the window cranks, what noyz said is what i do, to get them on just use a rubber mallet to help them on, a tap or two and they're on good and tight

Ditto on the don't get a fram oil filter. I've had the same problems with low oil pressure from them and the drain back valve is really more like a "make darn sure there is no oil to the motor for the first 20 seconds" valve. I switched to Purolator PureOne filters some years ago and have not had an issue since. Plus, they come in a pretty metallic blue color instead of orange.

Just to be on topic, I'll be putting some window handles on my latest daily driver here in the next few days. I'll snap a picture or two of the clip that holds them on from the back so it will be easy to see how simple to get off they are. (At least its simple once you've seen the side hidden from view when they are installed)
