man, i just got BRAND NEW tires last week. ok, so tonight im driving up to an intersection at about 30 mph, and the light turns yellow, so i put the brakes on, a little hard, not enough to tip over a glass of water on the dashboard or anything, just a little harder than usual, and my truck goes into this crazy skid, and i start having to pump the brakes and do threshold braking and all that nonsense. my rotors and pads are fine, but why the hell do i go into a skid every time it rains? i mean, brand new all purpose tires, the brakes work fine... is it just cause the truck is so light? or do they set the factory brake settings to 25/75 or something? thats the only explanation i can think of, because if i was driving our passat or nissan frontier, there wouldnt have been a problem stopping for that light. same thing with my brothers 1990 honda accord, which is a terrible car. anyone else experience this crappy braking?

heres a pic of my tires, as you can see they have alot of siping and deep center grooves

One brake could be locking up on you. Also i have heard that tires are made of different rubber compiunds, some harder some softer if your running a hard compound rubber tire the more likley they are to skid on a wet surface. I run softer compound tires. They usally have lower milage rating but grip the road better.

also check your rubber brake lines.
they could collapse on you causing the wheel to lock up.

In trucks this old sometimes the rubber break lines go all shitty. It's usually a good idea to replace all the rubber lines, which go from body to caliper.

try flushing your brake fluid till it's clear and see if some crap is stuck in the cylinders.

when i got my truck a couple years ago the brakes had never been rebuilt so it still had old fluid in it and a bunch of sediment. that blew out after five minuits of bleeding. try to do a pressure check on the front and rear brakes seperatly and see if you blew a seal in the master cyl too. the rear could've blown and the front brakes would be at a lower pressure locking up the back.

if it's your tires.....you could peel out a HELLAVA lot more.try it to make sure.

i dont think its the tires haha, but i did flush the front brakes... maybe i should do the same for the back. there was alot of junk in there, but that was like 2 months ago. im think it must be the brake lines... ill flush the rear brakes and check the brake lines tomorrow or this weekend. ill post back with the results..

*and i just realized how big my avatar is, so im reducing the size, sorry guys!

I too am having a brake problem... while sitting on hills, with the front pointing uphill, my pedal slowly falls until it reaches a certain point, if i don't keep applying more pressure until that point, it rolls back slowly until i get honked at. It has done this since i got it, but i've never really thought much about it.

sry about the off subject post

just another idea.....check your wheel cylinders/calipers, to see if they're leakin.
I had a '70 phord truck. Everytime I'd hit the brakes, it start to slide sideways. I checked inside, from underneath the truck, & the front pass side tire was wet, with brake fluid. The wheel cylinder was leakin, the brake pedal was also spongy, & would bleed down at red lights, etc..

Just my 2 cents.

Hope you find the problem.

I have the same problem, and i think it is the wheel cylinder. That is what the garage told me anyway. I have the same problem on rainy or damp days it is the worst. They washed everything out good and it helped a little. Also, the previous owner had the rear chuck full of fluid, we drained off the excess. Problem is better, but not solved. I think I am going to need a new wheel cylinder eventually.

i duno how readily availabe wheel cylinders are over there, but i can pick em up for around $45 per cylinder for rears, in the process of finding out the fronts

The same exact problem prompted my wreck Tuesday before Thanksgiving!!! I've already done rear brakes and wheel cylinders, front brakes, front rubber lines, master cylinder, and right front caliper. Again, the problem is better, but this was all done before my wreck. Locked the brakes on a wet road and WHAM!! I'm going to replace the rear rubber line and flush the brakes, hoping for the best. My guess is partly the lightness of the truck!! Any suggestions would help out many of us by the sound of this thread!! By the way, $23 a piece for wheel cylinders at Carquest!! Hope this helps!

I'm new here. I've had my truck for 20 years but I'm new to this forum so I hope this posts.

You didn't say what locked up. Was it the rear, or the front, or both?

My experience has been that the rears lock real easy. I guess they set the proportioning valve heavy in case you're carrying a load. I've been meaning to experiment with an adjustable proportioning valve, but haven't gotten to it yet.

I had a similar problem. The light turned. I hit the brakes, the backs locked, and I screeched to a halt just over the crosswalk. The fat woman in the car beside me sneered and said "Where'd you get your license, Cracker Jacks?" (real original.) I smiled at her and sweetly said "I'm glad you weren't in the truck, I'd have never gotten stopped."
