I bet one man could move a rail car on level ground if he had something to brace his feet against, and he wasn't a pencil pusher. I'd try.

If you have ever watched a world's strongest man competition, you would have seen it. They have to pull a rail car so many feet in one of the events.

Well after a tin of copenhagen and a lot of wasted time heres my math..

Holding Friction/Wind resistance/Drivetrain Loss/etc. Constant. We want to accelerate the box car to 5 km/h (3.1 miles per hour) and predicting we would reach that speed in 10 seconds..

Box Car weighs 9,000 kg, 3.1 mph = 1.38m/s.,For all intensive purposes the LUV weighs 1300 kilograms.

Using Principle of Linear Impulse and Momentum..

m*v1 + |F| *d*t = m*v2
F(10s) = (9000kg) (1.38m/s) + 1300 kg
F=1421.4 Newtons

1421.4 Newtons required to move the Box Car AND the weight of the LUV.
_______________________________________

Power = Work/Time P=W/t

Assume our little LUV makes 75 hp.

(75 x .7457) = 55.9 Kilowatts of engine output

P=F*v

63.4Kw = F*1.38m/s
F=45.9 KiloNewtons or 45,900 Newtons exerted by the LUV.

45,900N - 1421N = 44,479 Newtons left to spare.

45,900N/1421N = 32.3 #

Now remeber that we did not factor in Friction of the steel on steel for the box car, wind resistance of the box car, drivetrain loss in the LUV, etc. But theoretically we can conclude that the LUV will pull 32.3 +/- box cars.

So I think it is safe to say, that in the worst case senario(lots of friction, loss of drivetrain power, etc.) a LUV will pull AT LEAST 1 box car. :wink:

I don't know, looks like he either forgot to carry a 1 or got his decimal in the wrong place.

Dammit :evil:

m*v1 + |F| *d*t = m*v2
F(10s) = (9000kg + 1300kg) (1.38m/s)

..is what it should read

Either way the answer is correct ( 1421.4 N), I just screwed up typing it out.. :roll:

No it looks good and correct, I just finished a Chemistry class and had to use some of those very same formulas, so in my professional opinon I say it looks correct.

Did it again.......LUV pulled trailer house again today. This time FULL of LUV parts, clear to my junk-yard (8 miles away) estimated 10,000+lbs 8O
I thought for minute of borrowing a bigger truck, but then thought "No, that would be an insult to me an MY truck" and I jus went for it hoping my back bumper wouldnt fall off,as luck had it........all ended well 8) :wink: :D
