One of our members, found out why it's not a good idea to weld without a shield yesterday. When the swelling goes down and he can see well enough to type and look at his monitor, he can fill in the details...

It has to be LUVNIT. Flash burns suuck major ass. It took me like 5 times before I stopped doing it. I found (through my many flash burns and talking to many old time welders) that if you cut up a potatoe into small chuncks and put it over your eyes while you sleep (or try to) it helps the swelling to go down and helps "cool" the brun down. I wnt from like a 5 day recovery to a two day with this. Hope it helps.

I once had an old timer welder tell me that vicks vapor rub on the eyelids works great for flashburn. This was after I suffered the effects of it once and I have not had a chance to test this theory again. I learned my lesson the first time. My experience was so bad I had to shut off everything in my bedroom the generated light that night in order to sleep. That included a power strip that was under a desk on the other side of the room. After the first 24 hrs though I was pretty close to being back to normal, just wore sunglasses for a couple of days after that.

I got Flash Burn once. Man did that ever suck. Dad and I were building a new calving shelter, and just the way it was designed we had to hold the damn thing with two hands and use are tails to tack weld the thing..(thats seriously about how hard it was) But after a lot of open eyed welds and what not, it was together....but then around 2 or 3 at night...STING! Wow, did it burn. Since then I went and bought one of them auto darkening masks. Well worth the $300. If you go to buy an auto darkening one, don't cheap out, buy a good one, hell this is our eyes were talking about here..

Yha it was me, what a dum ass. I was welding the bottom of my motor mounts and the helmet wouldnt fit with my head stuck behind the disc brakes and what not. Damn did it burn. Has to be the worst thing I have ever experienced. I meen I have broken bones and gotten cut, but the burn in my eyes was so bad that I thought I was gonna die. Thank god for Moriphien. Anyway eyes startin to hurt staring at the screen. Time for some oxycotton, or something like that they gave me. Talk to you soon. Thanks for the sympathy. I know you want to call me a bumb ass, everyone at home has

How about non spelling "bumb ass" LOL

Hope you get better soon. I got welder burn once years ago, and it felt like I had a ton of sand in my eyes. I used cucumbers(sp) to soak my eyes.

Yeah same here.......hope ya get better soon, and hey....the cucumber as well as the potatoe thing DO work.
Last year i had to weld a very difficult spot on Yugo exhaust , was in same situation where mask would not fit for where I had to weld, and dude........I know how you're feeling, sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.
I for one will not call you any names,it's just one of those deals where you had no choice and I understand 8)

Take care and just refrain from doing that anytime again soon. When i did that i had to drive 500 miles the next evening on a mandatory trip and i went thru pure hell everytime i came up on a town.So sit back and take it easy and just catch up here when you're not in pain PEACE

never had flash burn in the eyes from a welder i got it from a high powered spot light at some mud bogs one time. i guess the promoters forgot to install a filter on it. there was 3500 people with there eyes burned. i have had flash burn on my legs arms and chest though when i was young and dumb, i was welding together a sandrail frame with just shorts on. it was about 110 deg outside and welding at night. man did i hate myself for the next week.

And to anybody that hasn't had this happen. consider this a warning " DONT FLIPPIN DO IT" Wear the helmet, and if it wont fit, then at least take the lens out of the helmet, and hold that up to your eyes!!!!
