According to today's regulators
and bureaucrats, those of us
who were kids in the 40's,
50's, 60's, or even maybe
the 70's probably
shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cribs were covered
with bright colored lead-based
paint.

We had no childproof lids
on medicine bottles, doors
or cabinets, ... and when we
rode our bikes, we had no
helmets.
(Not to mention the risks
we took hitchhiking.)

As children, we would ride
in cars with no seatbelts
or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pickup
truck on a warm day was
always! a special treat.

We drank water from the
garden hose and not from
a bottle.

Horrors!

We ate cupcakes, bread and
butter, and drank soda pop
with sugar in it, but we were
never overweight because
we were always outside
playing.

We shared one soft drink
with four friends, from one
bottle, and no one actually
died from this.

We would spend hours building
our go-carts out of scraps
and then rode down the hill,
only to find out we forgot
the brakes.

After running into the bushes
a few times, we learned to
solve the problem.

We would leave home in the
morning and play all day,
as long as we were back
when the street lights
came on.

No one was able to
reach us all day.

NO CELL PHONES!!!! !!

U n t h i n k a b l e !

We did not have Playstations,
Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no
video games at all, no 99
channels on cable, video
tape movies, surround
sound, personal cell phones,
personal computers, or Internet
chat rooms.

We had friends!

We went outside and found
them.

We played dodge ball, and
sometimes, the ball would
really hurt.

We fell out of trees, got
cut and broke bones and
teeth, and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

They were accidents.

No one was to blame but us.

Remember accidents?

We had fights and punched
each other and ! got black
and blue and learned to get
over it.

We made up games with
sticks and tennis balls and
ate worms, and although we
were told it would happen,
we did not put out very many
eyes, nor did the worms
live inside us forever.

We rode bikes or walked to
a friend's home and knocked
on the door, or rang the
bell or just walked in and
talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.

Those who didn't had to
learn to deal with disappointment.

Some students weren't as
smart as others, so they
failed a grade and were
held back to repeat the
same grade.

Horrors!

Tests were not adjusted
for any reason.

Our actions were our own.

Consequences were expected.
The idea of a parent bailing
us out if we broke a law
was unheard of.

They actually sided
with the law.

Imagine that!

This generation has produced
some of the best risk-takers
and problem solvers and
inventors, ever.

The past 50 years have
been an explosion of
innovation and new
ideas.

We had freedom, failure,
success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal
with it all.

Please pass this on to others
who have had the luck to grow
up as kids, before lawyers
and government regulated our
lives, for our own good !!!!!

I was born in 88' and that sounds alot like my life. I definantly get what you're saying, we now have a law here in spokane saying you have to wear a helmet when you're riding a bike, skateboard, and other stuff like that, or else it's a $56 ticket. I think it's because they don't want their tax-payers getting hurt or dying, cause then they get a pay cut, and not to mention how much they get if the tax payers don't follow these rules, it's a win-win situation for them. But I'm only 16, so what do I know?

The latest I heard relating to this was just the other day. On the radio, some lady from a group of some kind wanted teachers to change the pen color they use when grading papers from red to a suggested color of purple.
Seems red causes too much apprehension because of the negative conotations. Too strong a color.
Purple on the other hand, still stands out but doesn't carry the same negative attachments. So the children will feel better.

What a bunch of crap! Stuff like this drives me nuts!

Well, I grew up in the 60s and 70s and the best way I can put all that was said there in a nut-shell, is like this here:
This country is getting fatter and lazier as time goes on,and law enforcement has taken the power that they have and gotten so carried away with it,that they now abuse it.Not to mention the way they waste our tax-dollars.
I could go on and on about how things are so much different than when I was a kid but its all pretty much said there, thing is I remember all those days.Compared to alot of you on here Im an old fart, shoot Ive got kids in their 20s.But I better back outta this one, cause i could easily get carried away here and miss out on a parts request. Lord forbid that happen. 8O LOL 8)

Kids today need an asswhippin. When the schools no longer were able to stomp a kids ass for acting up, this country started on a downward spiral. I got my ass whipped about every other day for acting up in school. Eventually, I learned to not act that way, because when I got home, there was another asswhippin waiting on me. And sometimes, a kid needs a big red F on a paper to show him/her HEY MORON!! QUIT BEING A DUMBASS!!!

Sorry, rant off. Just hate the way kids have no respect at all these days. Seems like when I go to the store, or the wal-mart to grab soemething, kids are rude as hell. Don't open doors for old people anymore, or say "Yes maam", or Yes sir". My boy will know how to act among adults or there will be a belt with his name on it like I had as a kid.

Well I agree w all that grimace said there, and I wanted to speak on kids these days w no respect but I stopped and thought of the average age on here (alotta kids) and was a fraid Id start another civil war LOL
Anyway, nicely put, and my boys are old school gentlemen.....it hasnt been easy but Ive taught them that way and I still believe in a belt and ass whoopin jus like I used to get.
Thing is there are many that are older ppl that i can think of personally that need a belt on thier ass worse than some of the kids ever will :!: LOL
Sad but true....and NO this is NOT directed at ANYONE in Luvtruck.com before someone jumps off again (this is ppl I know PERSONALLY) clarifying that right now.

Oh there are other ways... i.e. do you want a timeout? I'm not going to tell you again. I mean it this time. I really mean it this time...
Or the old stand by... just ignore your kids while they run wild and are rude little screaming monsters.

I for one am glad I got the strap. You learn there are consequences for your actions. I think that is one of the big problems today for kids and adults alike, it's always someone elses fault so no consequence for doing something dumb.

i figured that the semi old timers and oldies(no offence lil blue) would get a little kick out of this.

i was raised with a belt but my father strictly DID NOT allow the words sir or mamn in our house, he was ex milatary and hated the fact that his C.O. was a moron. respect for older people was there right because the've seen things that a youngster couldn't imagine.

anyway...thanks for making me feel not so old guys.....i'm happy that someone understood what the letter was about.......my wifey didn't......

stupid laws in my town if you own a bicycle you have to ride with a helmet, have reflecters on all 4 sides, and have some sort of head light, if your bicycle is not up to code it will be towed at owners expense and be fined $200, and the worst part is they are starting to inforce the law beacuse our county is going broke

Not to get off the subject but does anyone remember tube testers? As a kid, my Dad used to go to 7-11 with a few vacuum tubes for T.V. sets. He would walk up to a machine that looked like a video game and plug them it to sockets that matched the tubes. This machine would tell if the tube was good or not. If one tested bad, you could buy a new tube from behind the counter at the 7-11. The clerk ended up being fairly knowledgeable on T.V. repair. I brought this up at work the other day and alot of the younger crowd couldn't imagine that a 7-11 was like a little radio shack. Guys my age and older were smiling over the fact that life was a lot simpler then.

Put it this way....We left Alabama in a 1949 Packard w one of those old trailers w one wheel up under the middle of it.The wheel broke off in Colorado Springs, that ended up being home for alotta years.
The good ol days were the best..fender-skirts, cars w 400 horse power, and ppl just seemed more kind and helpful back then..I better shut up, i could be here all day w stories of those days  :P 8) :D

I agree schools should be allowed to give kids the belt and some of todays parents should not be afraid to leave a mark on the kid for disobeying . I remember my dad useing a long skinny choncho belt on me it would hurt for days. I think kids are too spoiled today. I think that if the schools would make kids fight out their problems with boxing gloves in the gym it would help with some of the problems in schools.
