 Post subject: Anybody with a 4x4...

I have an 80 4x4 and had a question about the 4x4 shifter. It locks into 4 wheel low nicely, but in 4 wheel high it just kinda sits in there and can easily pop out. Is this the way it is supposed to work? Or is it supposed to lock into 4 wheel high as well?

On bumpy terrain, I have to hold the shifter in 4H to keep it in there.

They just sit there. Yours might have some wear on it that would cause it to pop out. Mine slips out if I drive over rough roads in 4 high.

Lots of folks here use a bungee cord to hold it in place.

I didn't want to be the first to say that, but yeah. I use a bungee cord to hold it there also :D

That's funny, guys! Okay at least I know that other 4 wheel shifters on these trucks are working the same way. Looks like I'm going to be running a bungee cord next time I go off road.

You could always trim your floorboard. I did , and mine does'nt jump out anymore. If you do trim it though the boot will be very diffacult to put back in place. I went with a whole new rubber boot with a metal surounding bracket. Looks good, and works good to. I think , and I'm not sure though.If you adjust your torshion bars it will center the shifter, and your problem will be gone. I lifted my 80 luv, so I had no alternative but to cut, cut , cut!!!

there should be a spring on the shifter underneath the boot to hold it. Mine will stay in 4wd high but if i hammer it hard and bounce around it will pop out.

Hey John, what did you pay for the boot with metal braket? I'd like to put some on my Luv's shifters. I had to cut holes after I put the lift on my Luv
and anotehr one when I put the trooper tranny in.
