i rebuilt my motor and there's still a tapping noise coming from the top end.....is this just a loud motor?it sounds like the valves need to be adjusted but i know i did them right.

do the rockers need to be replaced? i thought that you never needed to replace rockers on a overhead cam unless they were broken. they don't really sit square on the valve tops any more.

since the luvs don't have lifters, its pretty much impossible to get all the noise out. other than being noisy it doesn't hurt anything.

cool.... i just was worried that i had done something wrong.....

now that you mention lifters........my old chevette engine had hydralic(sp)valve adjusters.....it was quiet....

so this tapping is probably just the valves closing?

No, backlash on the mechanical lifters closing when the cam lobe comes around for each valve.

so my valves aren't totaly adjusted?

the cam(delta instructions said .008 on the intake and .010 on the exaust.
i know the stock settings were .006(intake) and .010(exaust).

what would happen if i closed the gap a little? just a .001 or.002. maybe set it back to stock?

are the settings really inforgiving or just a round about guideline?

this noise just scares the hell out of me cause it just don't sound right. kinda like the reason i won't drive a diesel cause it sounds like i'm gonna throw a rod.

Don't re-adjust the valves. Since there's no hydraulic lifters, they're going to be noisy. The price of a retro engine. At least it's an overhead cam.

don't readjust them tighter. then the valve won't completely close. too loose is better than too tight.

those rockers are almost exactly like the datsun ones.
You got to adjust about .008 intake and .010 ex. I did mine .006 and .oo8 on my Datsun.

How ever if you got a Delta regrind is there away to increase the other side of the rocker. You can adjust the one side. On datsuns you have to get a bigger lash pad or shims inlike other cars to lift the other end of it otherwise you will not get a center wipe pattern on the rocker. Otherwise you could run off the edge and damage the cam lobes.
When they regrind they make the base circle smaller so to get the geometry back some kind of spacer or shim is stalled to the the lobe pattern center again

Also my datsun book say New rockers on a new Cam.

PS Mike your Delta cam(out of Tacoma Wash). Mine didnt come out as Spec. The lift was like .050 to short. Thats alot on a cam
