Alrighty my LUV wont idle well after its been run hard. Its not over heating and oil presure and amperage is all good. It acts like the carb is loading up but theres no smoke off of it. Right now im thinking its the ignition coil. So would it be a good bet to do a full tune up (cap rotor wires plugs) and replace the coil? maybe clean the air filter too? Just looking for some imput on this, thanks.

I was gonna ask you a few things along those lines when i got the chance. my truck has been geting hotter than normal since i built the motor up, as well as stumbling when it's really hot,but it doesn't over heat though

The stumbling seems to be the verge of vapor lock on my truck. so i thought that just keeping it cooler under the hood would solve the problem.

Do you have a stock radiator in your truck? i was considering a three core radiator and a slightly cooler thermostat......as well as insulating the fuel lines.

I also thought about re-designing the front end to force more air through the radiator, but that is a project and a half in it's self.

Or you could do what I did: Take and put 4 small electric fans in front of radiator hooked to a toggle switch. Around town I dont really need them but out on the road doing 80 mph all day from here to Alabama they did keep the temp level down below normal quite a bit as i hammered on in the 90 +degree heat 8) :D

well my luv has a 190* T-stat and it will warm up to just past the 190* mark on my temp gage and then it will settle just on the bottom side of the 190* mark, and that was doing 80mph acrost central washington to the tacoma meet. That was the last time drove it i just kinda thought about that on the back to the barraks one night for some reason...

Hook a vacuum gauge to a port on the intake manifold and run the hose into the cab where you can see the gauge when engine gets hot. That ought to tell if there's a leak or not.

my truck was doing that for awhile too!

the first time i found the backpressure transducer was sticking open allowing vacuume to get to the egr valve after the temp controller valve opened up....

the second time was just recently... i poped the air cleaner off only to find that my carbeurator was falling apart! the anti dieseling solenoid was loose, the midsection gasket was bulging out, and the upper section screws were about 5 turns out! guess it needs a rebuild :D oh yeah! and there was a mouse nest in the air cleaner 8O it doesnt get driven much

well all emmisions related things are straight out. I stripped it all and plugged the hole in the intake where the EGR used to be (before that was just not hooked up). Robert, what type of leaks would i be looking for, i only have 2 vac lines, dist. advance and brake booster.

Sounds like you have it just about as stripped down as you can get it. That's what I did with mine. I went so far as to pull attachment on the under side of the intake manifold and bolted a plate to it to cover the hole. The EGR valve itself was the culprit on mine. So much carbon the shuttle couldn't close at low speeds, thus leaning the mixture out to much. Even went to far as to put a new EGR valve on it for nothing. I think the only way to fix mine would be to take the manifold and the bolt on attachment for EGR valve and boil them out good. And then I wonder how long that would work. My LUV had only 75K on it when the problem occurred. The vacuum shouldn't flutter at all on a clean engine when it's held to a constant RPM. The diaphram for spark advance can cause a vacuum leak if it has a hole in it. And if the carb mounting nuts can loosen over time and allow a vacuum leak past either gasket on the spacer. When's the last time you tightened nuts holding the manifold to the head? There's a vacuum operated diaphram in the inlet of the breather that opens the neck to fresh air instead of preheated air from around the exhaust manifold shroud. That's all I can think of the top of my head.

well i just had the motor stripped down to fix a few oil leaks. I have a webber too and by no emmisions i mean NOTHING. Theres nothing on it but the essetials. I guess when i get back home ill do a full tune up on it and get a new coil for it as well and see if that solves it. If it dosent then i guess its on to traking some vac lines, YAY!

Mepr: you have a stock distributor? I had a couple of those go bad on me before I changed over to a Mallory Unilite. The shaft bushings in one went bad and the mechanical advance springs in the other went bad. Besides, I hate points. Sheet metal, Huh? I used to spend some time there fabricating home projects. Our electrical shop used to get some POV projects.

Schucks...that's where the two bum stock distributors came from. I thought about an 81 distributor, since the part number is only one digit different from the 80 points one, but I remember those transistorized ones being a little flaky when they came out. I don't mean the Isuzu ones, just in general. So I went to Unilite. It's holding up good so far. Where you stationed Mepr? I retired from Mountain Home in January 1978.

mine has been idleing rough lately and i found that the weber adapter plate had come loose the allen head screws under the weber had backed out causing a major vacuum leak. i was working on it today and haven't gotten it back together yet.

I looked for lock washers that would fit into the recessed hole for just that reason but had no lock. I ended up dripping some marine spar varnish into the wholes onto the allen bolts. This is what we did to scope mount screws on our hunting rifles so recoil wouldn't loosen them.

i have had my carb come loose before (2feet of air under all fours does wonderfull things..) and its not like a vac leak. Its like inconsistant spark or too rich. Im getting stationed at McChord, but ill be back home in Oct. after i graduate from tech school for some time whith family and friends. Drop me a PM sometime, maybe we could meet up or something.
