I just bought a LUV. The previous owner had painted over the rust so it apeared fine. I got to work installing bucket seats when I found it. the drives and pasangers floor has a decent amount of rust. it has gone through in 4 spots. Water seemed to have gone through the vents on the sides of the cab and go all the way to the floor. Should I spend the time to cut it out with a torchand (wish I had a plasma cutter) weld new sheetmetal in, or should I search around for a better cab and put in on..........

I've heard it's a pain to find any body parts that size in salvagable condition so it would probably be easier and cheaper to just repair it yourself. But then, I've never so much as knocked out a dent before, so I'm not the expert.

I did some patch work to my truck and it's holding up fine so far. It would have been best to fix it right. I know that in the future, i'll be cutting out big sections of mine to fix it. I'm holding off untill the rocker panels can be worked (replaced) too.
One thing is for sure, you'll be better off fixing what you have now then trying to find one it better shape.

cut it out.....weld in a replacement.

this is a real PITA for our trucks b/c replacement patches arent really avalible, as compared to like a 85 fullsize GMC where you can order dang near a whole new truck thru JC Whitney.

but with a little luck, some cutting and welding, and a little patience......ok ALOT of patience it can be done.

case in point......my rocker panels was patched w/ paper towels and bondo





after cutting the old crap out and welding in some new rockers



i made the new panels b/c i couldnt find any....they do come up on ebay once in awhile.....but we got a big ass sheetmetal brake and shear at my guard unit so i just made them.
they didnt come out perfect......lets face it...this thing will NEVER win any trophies for being pretty....but ALOT better than it was.

I just replaced my rockers with repo's I got from http://www.surplussupplyco.com and they were a good fit.Cost was $39.00 each.

sweet.....wish i wouldhave found that before i went thru the trouble makeing them.....oh well...it was on uncle sams time

my luv has just spent the last 3 months at the pannel beaters, i got him to replace both rocker pannels and the pass side (aussie pass side that is) floor. he made it all himself and it came up a treat

I have a couple of cabs here that I plan on chopping up soon so that I have a roof or two and back panels on hand. Will cut out other pieces as specified upon request...NO job too big or small.
