Has anyone had to replace a fuel pump relay? The part stores said it’s a dealer item, dealer said they don’t carry them. Will one work off another truck, I sort of thought they where a generic part

your best bet is to take it off and take it to the parts store and see if they can match it up, you may have to rewire it to fit a universal relay.

I replaced mine with an autozone relay. I am at work, but when I get home, I will post a pic of the wiring diagram I drew up, and the part number for the relay.

OR.....do what i did when mine went out. Direct wire the fuel pump to a toggle switch, one less part to worry about and mine has been that way nearly two yrs and no probs w it.

The general thinking when this topic has come up before was to try to avoid running the fuel pump off direct power (either switched or from the ignition) for safety. If you get into an accident, the pump could stay on dumping fuel into the engine compartment and feed a fire under the hood. The other option was to wire a relay to an oil pressure switch which would cut off the pump if the motor stops running.

Getting a standard relay to work should not be too hard but would take some staring at the wiring diagrams. I like to use http://www.partsexpress.com for that sort of parts, they are cheap but the quality of the parts and the service has always been good for me.

He has a really good point. I know no one counts on an accident, but if it happens, I dun wanna be b-b-q.

Ok here is the rundown on the relay. Apparently, my diagram gets distorted when I try to post it, so here is what you need to do. Take your old relay off, and cut the connector off of the wire bundle. I left about 2 inches of wire on the connector if I ever needed to use it again. Now, get some blue female spade connectors and crimp them onto the wires for the relay. Should be 5 of them.


The autozone relay part number is MR-78.

The black wire with a red stripe goes from the relay to the fuel pump, and it goes on #30 of the relay.

The white wire with a red stripe is the power to the coil of the relay. It goes on #85.

The solid black wire is the relay ground, and it goes on #86.

The black wire with a yellow stripe is from the 5 amp fuse from the ignition switch, it goes on #87.

The Black wire with a white stripe is from the start side of the ignition switch, it goes on #87A.


I have had this relay on my truck for a year and a half now, no problems. I have a real hard time with putting a switch in to replace the relay, because the relay is there for a reason. When the truck dies, the relay opens, and the pump quits running. In case of a roll-over, or a fire, a switched pump would continue to pump fuel onto a hot/burning truck and be dangerous. This relay cost me about 5 bucks.

I know this is digging through the old posts, but Grimace man! This relay business should be in the Docs section of LUVtruck.com! Every other LUV I've seen has a switch under the dash for the fuel pump!

Where is the fuel pump relay located?

passenger side front fender wall gold colored box plate between the battery and the coolant bottle/ it is screwed on with like 4 screws to the wall inside that area (at least it is on my 1980 chevy luv in that area)its the bigger block inside. if you un connect it it will have 5 pins/ports

hope this helps this is the one that was in the truck but we replaced it now

And how would you go about "testing" the relay? With a volt meter?

Ok, opened the box that holds the relays, there are 3 in there 1 5wire and 2 4wire..., fuel pump(5wire) resistor bypass(4wire closet to fuel pump relay) and the vacuum switching relay(4wire closet to the cab). Well, my vacuum switching relay was cut..., you think that's why it won't pass smog...?

i have a 1980 chevy luv 4x4 and mine only had two the wiring diagram for mine (series 10) in the book only shows 2
the part was cheap (after spending $$ daily on my P.O.S. 9.99 started to look cheap) so we bought a new relay and gold disconnects. if you go to category- stock trucks and at use the keyword vacuum switching relay you will probably come up with more info that i can give you. if it is bad or you want to change it out and never guess if thats why about it again there could be info on this site what wire is what and where it goes. (like i found on this thread. relating to fuel relays.)

Thanks Grimace, I replace the fuel pump relay with the one from autozone and it fixed my problem! My gen light is on now, but I think I might of switched 87a and 87 around. The relay is 13.00 now stupid inflation.
