Post subject: Spare Tire
PostPosted: Sat Jul 24, 2004 10:47 am
My teenage son fell in love with this 81 chevy luv that he just had to have. He bought the truck for 400 bucks . The engine is isuzu. It runs okay. My question is how does he remove the spare tire from underneath the truck.
Thanks,
Single mom

There should be a crank behind the seat that lowers the tire. It basically just a metal rod about 3 or 4 feet long with a bend on one end to make a handle and a sorta flattened tip on the other end. You place it in a hole just above the license plate and it goes all the way back to the spare carrier directly above the spare tire.

If you don't have the crank, I can't think of any very easy ways to get the spare down. I know I have at least one extra around, but they are not exactly small or easy to ship. If you post your general location someone in your area might have one you could buy or at the least one to use to get the tire out where it can be used.

The other option is to look in junk yards around your area. I'm not sure if other similar cranks would work or which ones, but something from a 70s to 82 LUV will work or maybe a bit newer Isuzu pickup might do the trick as well. I don't know about your area, but the local junkyard pretty much tells me $5 for anything that isn't specifically a commonly replaced part like engine/drivetrain components or body panels.

I lost mine years ago and i was able to remove the spare using a bunch of 3/8 drive extensions and a flat blade, 3/8 drive tip. I found one from a guy parting out an old Luv so im good now. The tool is very basic and can be made from round bar. 2-90 degree bends and a flattened tip shaped like a blade will make it like a new one.
Once you get the spare out, it would be wise to spray some lube in to the mechanism, as you might be able to tell as you get the tire down.

If you can get under the truck bed, and had the tire iron with the flat tip on one end it might do the trick.

Since I put a lift on my Luv and put 215 75 R15 on, the spare touches the exhaust piple, eventually Im going to replace the exhaust and have it adjusted. (Also the pipe comes really close to one of the rear shocks, anybody's else lke that?)
