:? How can I find out if my 78 is a cal. truck or not.
I have a Haynes book but can not figure this thing out. I don't have a BP transducer, but I do have a cat.
I have the vaccuum switch on the left near the fuse block and the mixture control valve up the front on the right . Of course the air pump (although I tink it might be weak) and the air control valve are there the egr works but when its hooked up the eng. will sputter and caugh like crazy.
Any ideas or help would be very muck appreciated.

Repost in stock trucks would get you more answers. From what I recall, if you have a cat, you have a cali emissions truck. They might have added cats to federal trucks in 81 or 82, but I don't think so. I'd assume you have california emissions gear and see if that helps things make more sense.

Moved it for ya!!!! 8)
Not sure the answer to your question but I think that the only 78's that had cats were the Cali models. I dont remember how many times getting an emissions here in Colorado I had to point that out to them in thier books. They would always try to fail me right away for no convertor and then I would have to have them look at the footnotes for the 78!!! :) , then ask them if I was in California or Colorado. I worked at a gas station in 85 and we had an emmision tester so I was always thumbing through the standards books!!

Thanks for the move!!
Ok. So I have a cali truck like I thought. But the vaccuum diagrams in my book and the ones another guy on this site sent me, show a BP transducer. I can't find one on my truck, not even an empty hole where one should be. Someone told me it was at the front on a bracket off the intake manifold but I have nothingI even checked at the local Pep Boys and the computer showed no such thing???
Can any one tell me what a BP transducer does ? Ron

Are you referring to a Back Pressure transducer?

Oh yea. I also don't have a dashpot. Thats the little guy on the carb that won't let the throttle slam shut and cause the eng to back fire. The book says I should have one on a cali truck so I guess I've got my hands full.

I just luv a mystery
