I was reading the electronic ignition swap article, and while I don't have an 82 luv lying in my back yard, my brother-in-law has an 86 isuzu p'up in his. I'm not sure if is points or electric, but if it is electric would it be the same set-up as the 82 luv, since luv' and p'up's are basically the same thing?

not really... the 83 and newer pup's have a totaly different ignition system that attaches to the head behind the intake(from front to back), the distributer is different and the control module is built into the coil.

I've been tearing my hair out trying to find the right elec ignition and i can't get it done. i pulled a good distributer out of a 81 luv and still have no module.

i did find that the plug from the distributer(luv) fits a module from a pre 78 toyota 18r motor. i just can't find the dwell settings for the motor(18r)if it's close enough i want to use it but i just can't find the specs for a 18r with points.

The distributor on Isuzus didn't change locations to the back of the head until 86 with the 2.3L motor. All G180 and G200s (1.9L) have the disti in the same place as the LUV, though I don't know if in 83 they might have switched to a different module and made changes to the coil and disti or something.

I think an 86 PUP would have a 2.3L in it, you'd have to check to be sure. It would have the different distributor and coil, and be completely incompatible with the LUV. On the other hand, if the motor runs, you could swap that in so you have electronic ignition. ;)

I would just swap the whole motor, and the 5 speed trans, but the head sucked a valve and it costs too dang much to fix or replace. Nickel budget.

You're right, it's the 2.3 and it won't work, dang.

alright..... i got the info on the ignition setup.
get a distributer for an 81-82make damn sure it has the pickups in it.....

the ignitor out of a 70's toyota(mounts to the coil)make sure it's a nippondenso make , and there's al your parts.

i finaly found the dwell settings for a toyota w/points and they match so the ignitor's timing is the same.

I'm gonna be gone for a while but i'll let ya know how it works next weekend.
