How much more horsepower does a 350 have then a 283?? Can you put 350 heads on the 283 to ad more power?? Reason why I ask is there is a 283/tranny that is complete and runs in the paper for $250 and I am thinking, the price is good, but how much slower would my luv be w/ a 283

well that is tuff to answer both motors had years that had very good horsepower figures and also some very horrible ones.if you put 350 heads on a 283 it will probably lose power. most 283s came with either 58 or 64cc combustion chambers.most 350 were 76cc. therefore you could really drop the compression ratio by putting 350 heads on. the 350 will probably have more torque9 times out of 10 compared to the 283.as they say there is no subsitute for cubic inches. you will have to spend more money with the 283 to get the same power out put.

I got a 283 in my truck. Basically it all comes down to the cubic inches. And thats where the 350 pulls ahead of the 283. The only thing a 283 has really got against a 350 is the bore to stroke combination allows it rev faster. And thats a bonus with light trucks such as LUV's. But other then that, its gonna take more money and parts to make similar horsepower out of a 283 to match a 350. In stock form the 350 GENERALLY made more power. You would have to check years on motors to get accurate horsepower figures.

With the LUV's tendancy to have traction issues anyway, seems to me that a trade of some HP for higher RPM reliability might make sense.
