I am new to modifying my truck. I am putting a small block in it and plan on putting in a S-10 rearend. My question is what is the easiest way to convert my front disc brakes to a 5-lug pattern so that I can have matching wheels all the way around? I know this may sound like a stupid question but I have never done any serious modifying to a vehicle.....I have always been Mustang man and there are countless aftermarket parts for those, hence no modification necessary. Thanks to anyone who can help :?:

There is an article that is available on the conversion... Go to the main page, then click on info, and there is a brake conversion step-by-step there that you can use.

Hey admyank, do you mean the "Beer Budget Conversion"? If so I am not real sure about what it means by the "hubs". I already have disc brakes on the front.....it came like that. Do they mean to send the entire rotor in to that company? My rotors are like one piece with the lug studs built in.....I don't know if that is the way the 70's vintage LUV trucks are. But if they mean to send off the whole rotor then that is easy, I will just buy some new ones and send 'em.

guys from my crowd are taking their 6 lug spindles and ditching them for toyota spindles, rotors, calipers....its a matter of welding in a flat plate on the upper and lower control arms and drilling the new plate to accept the toyota ball joints. and on top of that this conversion will give you a 5 on 4.5 pattern not the 5 on 4-3/4 that gm uses.

While it sounds easy there is alot a person could mess up in this conversion.

just out of curiosity which s-10 rear did you end up getting? the 7-5/8 or the 8-1/2? The reason I ask is that the 7-5/8 is probably no stronger than the stock rearend that came out of the pup. The 8-1/2's are kinda hard to find too..

I probably mis-understood you in what you were doing. I thought you were attempting to go from 6 Lug to 5 Lug. The hub is actually the ball bearing cap/hub where the switch would be set if you had a 4X4.

Hey SunDown, I haven't gotten the rearend yet but I was planning on getting the 7 5/8........I would assume this one is the one most common to junkyards. The only reason I planned on buying the S-10 rearend is because I want a lower gear ratio than the 4.10 in my stock rearend but I can not seem to find out what kind of rearend it is. It is set up like a Ford 9" but it is only smaller(the axles pull out after removing four bolts). As far as the conversion you mentioned I don't think I want to even try that one, a little too complicated for me. I just wanted to know if there is a rotor I can buy that will work with my stock set-up but has 5-lug pattern....this is another reason for the GM rearend...I want 5-lug in the rear also.
Hey admyank, you didn't misunderstand. I am trying to go from 6 to 5-lug, but I do not a 4x4.

Ah, so you just needed to know what drums would work then?

I think the 82 Chevy S-10 stuff will work, but Ben or someone would have to confirm.

the s-10 rears came in 7.5 and 7 5/8 if they would have put an 81/2 in the s10 alot of people would be running them. they would be stronger and would hold up to a v8 easier.

OK.....maybe I am not going about this the right way. I plan on buying a S-10 rearend.......one it has a 5-lug set up and two I can buy different ring&pinion gears.

My question is about the front brakes. I already have disc brakes in the front.....my truck came with disc brakes. I want to change the disc up front to match the 5-lug pattern of a S-10 rearend so that my wheels will all match up.

Is there a rotor I can buy that will fit my truck that has 5-lug or do I have to find somewhere that can modify my stock rotors?

In the "Beer Budget Conversion" it talked about sending in your "HUBS" and having them redrilled. What exactly is a "HUB"? My front rotors are all one piece.......the studs, bearings and racings are all incorporated into it. Is that what I send in?

Hey I really appreciate the website you found, it was very helpful and even cheaper than I would imagine! You should really put that link on the user's list in the other part of this site. Thanks again

they did put 8-1/2's in the s-10's I had one. Factory 4.3L L35 with the 5 spd came std witht he 8-1/2" and that is why you do see some racing them. Bill Mach out of MI has procharged these bastards to 12 seconds in the 1/4....s-seriesforum.com has an ID guide on the rear axles.

but back on topic,

the 7-5/8 is far more common in the scrap yards. If you run the 7-5/8 or 7-1/2 I would keep it setup as an open diff instead of a posi or locker as they break pretty quickly with that much additional HP and no way to bleed it off (IE wheel spin).

For what your looking to do 87pupsbc, you might seriously look at the Vega rotor conversion ont he front, that would get you on a 5 lug setup and might be the most inexpensive, correct, way about it.

I'd be leary about redrilling the original hubs for a 5 lug conversion....you might want to check with guys that have done it before just to make sure its completly safe. I'd hate for you to crack the hub because it was redrilled.....just remember the more holes you put into the original hub casting, the more material your removing which changes the load bearing physical properties.

Hey Sundown, I really appreciate the info.

How exactly do you go about doing the Vega conversion?
Is it just replacing the rotors? Or the rotors, capilers, spindles, etc.?

no problem man..... there is a link that goes into it, luv4me on here has done the conversion and wrote the article, I cant seem to find it right now however........ But it is vega hubs, rotors and calipers if I remember corectly. The vega hubs need to be sent to a machine shop so they can machine the bearing race bores out to the same diameter that the luv hub uses. from here on out I think its pretty much a bolt on affair, but luv4me can tell you all the in's and out's of the conversion.
