If you go straight to "attributes" and then ask it to size it to 80x80, it won't size the pic the way you want it. at least that is my experience. I don't know much about computer stuff, I have just figured this out on my own, so I hope it's right!

one note, the ripway takes pics from your computer, so if the picture you want as your avatar is from the Web, you need to right click and save it to your pictures file. Then when ripway goes to that file, it'll be there for you to choose from.
