 Post subject: timing chain slippage
PostPosted: Fri Apr 30, 2004 12:45 am
does anyone have any tricks for pulling the head without the chain falling off the bottom sprocket? i dont really want to pull the motor again. i was thinking loop some wire around the top sprocket then remove from head and have someone be pulling up on the chain to keep it on the bottom sprocket. i dont need my head being junked because my timing's off

you have hit the nail on the head!, just hook it to something, bring the chain so it hangs over the edge of the motor and tie pulling down. when my engine was on a stand, i had an occy strap connected to the bottom of the stand

I never worried too much about t. I always made sure everything was timed correctly when I reassembled the engine. The top sprocket rests nicely inside the front cover against the adjuster.

I marked the tooth on the top sprocket and the corresponding link on the timing chain with typewriter white out, and then wired the chain to the top of the battery side of the engine compartment, assuring the chain couldn't slip on the bottom sprocket. Incidently, typewrite white out works good for marking the timing pointer and degrees on the crank pulley. Mine are still legible after years of rain and snow.
