When i drove out on the Hwy, the trans wouldn't shift in to 3rd. I disconnected the kick down cable and it worked correctly. Then later in wouldn't shift in to 3rd. Then it would. It's intermittent. Any ideas?

is the shifter pushing the lever all the way into gear?
might want to get under the vehicle and see if the lever is getting all the way into gear.

I've checked to see if all the gears would work (low, 2nd, drive and reverse, neutral and park). Im using the same shifter/cable assy from the Buick/TH 350 setup as before. It worked flawless for years. Im going to check my fluid level again and also the vacuum line to the modulator to make sure it's connected and that i didn't split it during the assy.

yeah, check the vacuum lines, not just at the modulator, but as far down as you can. i had that problem with mine, turned out i had a pinhole leak in the tubing, so all i did was chop that and put in a piece of rubber hose. now it works like it never had a problem.

I now know that the trans IS shifting correctly. The shift to 3rd is so faint i can barely feel it. Also i found out a major error on my part. I didn't reset my tach from 6 cyl to 8 cyl. I did the math and found that at if the tach is set to 6 cyl, 2700 r.p.m. will run the truck at 70 m.p.h. with the Buick V-6. With the tach in 6 cyl setting, 3600 r.p.m. will run the truck at 70 m.p.h. with the V-8. I have now reset the tach to 8 cyl and it should be correct. I wasn't going by the feel of the motor but the tach reading itself so having a faint shift to 3rd and a hi r.p.m. on the Hwy, i assumed that the trans wasn't going in to 3rd at all. Also by having a 390 carb that's undersized and under jetted only aided the faint shift by producing a weak mixture of air/fuel. I did check the vacuum line to the modulator with a vacuum gage and it checks out good. No leak at all. I even checked the Buick trans to compare it to and it's good too.
As for the carb, it causes detonation when applying any kind of load almost. Instead of trying to rejet the 390, i ordered a 600 c.f.m. Holley and it should be here Tuesday.

Kool that you fixed the problem. I did the same thing with the tach, so dont feel too bad, mine was worse, I forgot to take it from 4 to 8. I too am thinking about getting a holley. I'm not really liking my edelbrock right now, its dumping too much gas, so I think I will put that on my boat before I try to sell it, and get a holley for my LUV after I rebuild the truck.....
