now that i have all the mechanical and electrical working properly i have a slight stumble when i goose the accelerator. is this natural or is there some tuning procedure i don't know?

i rebuilt the thing perfecly and am running a slightly lean idle. the vehicle is fully warmed up when this happens.

i was thinking that i might need to install the elec ignition to correct this but wanted to ask around before i move on to the next project.

All the Hitachis on my 80 LUV stumbled. A Weber eliminated the stumble. If your carb is original or remanufactured, a stumble is almost inherent. Mine had vacuum leaks at the throttle plate shaft bushings, late opening of the vacuum operated secondary barrel, internal carb leaks, and that's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. I think it's a bad design.

It is a pretty poor design but I can say my 79 does not stumble with a hitachi on it. I can lug it all the way down to 3-400RPM and then step on it and it just goes. My 77 on the other hand does have the usual "SPLUT"-and-then-it-goes problem though. Even my 86 trooper which has a similar hitachi carb on a 2.3L does it to some extent. I think the solution is absolutely no vac leaks, but the shafts and everything else on the hitachi seem to always leak some. So, the whole fix is no leaks and a Weber I guess.

i have a weber on my 81 and a hitachi on my 80 the hitachi does not stumble and it idles as smooth as glass. i'm pretty happy with the hitachi, seems to do better on inclines than the weber. but, the weber definitely has more power. my hitachi had slop in the shaft that the butterflys are on. my uncle is a machinist and i had him put a bushing in it. make sure your vaccum advance is good and the timing is right.
