Okay crew got a prob. The other day I drove into town to pick up a load of lumber for a project at home. Anyway prior to that day I had left the radio on to long in the truck and kilt my battery. So I jumped it with the van and headed into town, with my wife following behind just in case I needed a jump. So get to where im going, shut it off, load the wood get back in, SURPRISE she wont start.  So get the van, hook up the cables and turn the key and Nada. Let it charge and still Nada. Ended up jumping the starter cyl. and it started right up. So my question is, do I have a bad ignition, or is the starter out or is it something else???? Thanks T.

you could've burned up you solenoids in your starter with the van hooked up. the good thing is, that the starter is easy to get to so if you ever need to start it just jump the solenoids with a screwdriver til you can get a new one. i think there about 65 bucks at autozone.

get a meter and see if you get 12 volts on that wire that goes to the solinoid. Pull wire off place red wire to it and blk to grnd . Place meter on correct scale and turn ket to the start position. if you get 12 volts then switch is fine and just your solinoid is bad. There might be kits for them but I could never get them right myself.
As for Auto zone,Schucks ect they sell the crappiest staters and alternator on the planet!

I agree with Banzai that would be the best way to check everything thats what i have had to before to test starter circuits and will tell where to go to next....

I fixed a Toyota truck which was EZ but my Hitachis were to hard for me to handle.

If you're going to check for power on the solenoid, use a 12 volt test light. You can have high resistance in the circuit from the start position on the ignition switch and still read 12 volts. This is called open circuit voltage and is the result of the internal high impedance in the multimeter's voltage circuit. With the test light, the high resistance will dim the test light or leave it off if the resistance is extremely high. This is becuz not enuf current will flow. Like a fellow driving at night with one head light dimmer than the other.

Well figured the starter was bad so I borrowed one from DIARMADHIM. Put it on, and turned the key. Still nothin  , so I try swappin out the selinoid[?]. Still nothin  . So what do I do next, what I should have done in the first damn place. Look for the obvious. Sure enough, damn plug on the back of the ignition was half way off. So fired it up, and now I have a rattle noise like something is hitting the flywheel :x Maybe my bendix isnt retracting all the way and its hitting??? Man what a hassle! Thanks for all the suggestions :!:

On a lot of starters, the rotor shaft gets dirty on the gear end of it. This keeps the gear from engaging or disengaging from the flywheel cleanly. Wiping it off and oiling it often saves the cost of a new starter.
