Well I got the head off again, what is the tool called that you use for checking straightness of a head or is there one, and while I have the head off should I change the intake and exhaust valves or would I have to change the cam also and should I get new valve springs for it. Is there a way to check for cracks without having to take it to a shop. Also I think I asked this before but I dont know, I truned the engine to TDC with the mark on the dampener aligned to 0 on the scale and the rotor points to the #4 firing position and the #1 and #4 pistons are all the way up, is this normal? I tried turning the engine one more turn but it does the same thing. Thanks in advance for any help

Don't know about the head. But the #1 and #4 cylinders fire exactly opposite of each other so when 1 is TDC for intake, 4 is TDC for exhaust. So 1 and 4 go up and down together and 2 and 3 go together. Whether it's a firing stroke or exhaust stroke depends on where the camshaft lines up, (which valves are opening or closing).

But shouldnt the rotor be lined up with the #1 firing position and not the #4. Shane

I had this same problem when I was adjusting the valves but I can't remmeber how I worked it out. I think that one full turn should move the distributor one half turn.

take a strait edge (a steel ruler) and a feeler gauge(.04) hold the straight edge down on it's edge in variose spots across the length and width of the head if you can slip the guage under the strait edge then it needs to be resurfaced.

are you turning motor by the cramk or the cam?

I am turning the engine by the bolt on the crankshaft. thanks for the help guys

you need to take the head to a machine shop to have it checked. you don't need to mess with the valves or the cam unless you want to just get the head rebuilt while its off. a head normally cracks between the intake and exhaust valves. you can normally see the cracks. the luv head is more prone to warping than cracking, if you blew a head gasket, chances are the head is warped.
