hi i have a 79 luv that is mostly stock. i want to put an exhaust tip on it because i cant really afford a new muffler and or system. would a 3/12 inch angle cut muffler tip make it sound any better? it has mostly stock exhaust except for a glass pack(really old!!) and a new catalitic converter( cant gut out i need to for smog  ) so i just wanted to know if that would make it sound any better! thanks!

just cut a section out and get a new SHORTER cherry bomb. there cheap (20 bucks)and the shorter they are the louder.
i don't think you really get a sound out of a exhaust tip. maybe one of those monza tips with the resonator. the yellow color one.

The only thing an exhaust tip will give you is more resonance at the tip. I put one on my LUV back in the 1.8L days, and it didn't do much. Some, but not much.

I would put exhaust on, that way the sound won't echo under your trucks bed. That will get you a ticket for sure. Just run the pipe out the side of the truck if you want the easy way of doing it. You could bend it all and stuff and put it out the back too. I think 2 inch pipe would be sufficient for a stock 1.8L. Im not sure what size of glasspack would be best. Im thinking an 18inch would be best. 13 inch might work also. But I would go with the 18inch to start with...

If you dump out clear under the truck it is also too easy to heat up a fuel line, cook a wire bundle, or just warm the gas tank a bit too much. 8O I bought one truck that had a stuck rear brake, turned out the exhaust had cooked the e-brake cable on that side and it stuck in the melted cable jacket. My brother also had a fun experience with his Ford trying to start his under bed spare tire alight on a trip, and that was with full pipes, just one running too close to the tire.

i used to have a cherry bomb glasspack, sounded a little too ricey for me but i don't have a cat. so it would not be as loud with a cat. now i have a turbo muffler and it doesn't sound as ricey, it was still a little too ricey for me so i made a tip out of a piece of 3 in. pipe, which made it sound a little deeper. 2in. pipe is as big as i would go, the 1.8 doesn't need a very big exhaust. too big and you will loose low end torque. as far as loudness, i wouldn't worry about it. i had a glasspack with no cat and it wasn't too loud. it wasn't even as loud as my gmc. so your should definitely be okay, the cat will quieten it down a little.

I've got a turbo muffler and a smallish dual resonator tip. I think the name on it is "Ansa" and the two ports are each about the size of the pipe coming into it. The tip really helped to mellow out the turbo muffler's ricer sound. It was not so much a quieter thing as it was a more tolerable sound.

My 77 started out with an 18 inch glass pack and full pipe to the back that had been used prior to going on that truck. While I was going to college I liked to see how many car alarms I could set off rolling through the campus parking area. I think while I had that setup I never once used the horn, just downshift a gear and everyone around knew I wanted their attention.
