Well yesterday I was driving my LUV just down my drive way and all of a sudden the back tires lock up and send me flying into the steering wheel. So after checking to see if all my teeth were where they should be I visually examined the rearend. I couldn't see any visual brake problems, and the rearend looked fine on the outside (no holes from broken ring gears). So I walked back into the yard and got the tractor and chain and hooked on and started to pull it back up the driveway. I drug it for about 30 feet, and the wheels break loose and its starts rolling. So I was like WTF? :? So I start the LUV up, throw it in Drive and drove it back up to the yard. And just as I passed the house, same thing, but only one tire locked up this time! So I'm sitting there in disgust, and put the truck in Reverse, and amazingly it popped and started to go backwards. So after that I just drove it in the shop and parked it. I never had time to do any work on it after that, but does anybody have any ideas to what the problem is? I got to try and get this fixed before I loose my teeth!!

BTW This truck is SBC powered with the stock LUV rear end. This is why i think its the rear end starting to fail on me????? :?

you might have broken teeth in the rear.
they get lodged in there and keep the rear from moving.

time for a 9"!

That's waht I was thinking. You could have broken a spider gear, and the piece of metal is just going with the flow so to speak.

Hmmm, ok thanks for the input guys. I also think theres something floating around in there causing it to jam. Is there any way to crack open the rear and flush the borken teeth or whatever outta there?? If i just flushed the teeth out, maybe i could get a few more weeks/days/months out of it! I don't really have much time to fool around with it, so if i don't do something like that its gonna have to sit

Don't worry i got back up rear though, got a chevy 12 bolt in the weeds! 3.73 gearing  Im gonna miss the 4.56 gearing though....

Well I had some extra time today, and I took the LUV for a test drive again. It did the exact samething, in the exact same spot. Tire(s) locked up. This time I just put the truck in reverse and give her some gas and it popped out and started to free wheel. So I drove it for a mile, and when I was slowing down, same thing, at about the same speed. I think it happens at about 15 mile an hour or so. It didn't do it everytime, about 3 out of 5 times. I have sort of ruled out any brake problems, b/c it does it whether or not your applying the brakes. I also did it in reverse, and when I was doing about 15 mile an hour in reverse, same thing, locked up. But you can drive 60 mile an hour, no problems. Baffles me to why it only does it at certain speeds. :?

I'm guessing that at high speed there is a lot of turbulance, and the gears are forcing the fluid around creating a pressure that keeps the metal outside of the gears. When the vehicle stops it floats to the bottom. When the gears start turning a little it picks up the piece and starts circulating it again. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
