I just recently bought a 77 luv. The original carburetor was missing the electric choke. I replaced with a carburetor off of a parts truck that my dad has. It ran fine for about 20 miles then all of a sudden it started skipping and running like crap. It wouldn't stay cranked with the new carb. Not knowing what was wrong I put the original carb back on, which worked fine before after it warmed up. This didn't help, it still won't stay cranked. It will run for about 20 seconds with my foot on the gas, and then it just dies. What's wrong? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

first thing that popped into my head is...vacuum leak. Check your hoses, and if you can get it running spray around the carb with carb cleaner and listen for an increase in rpm. Other than that check float level, check/ replace fuel filter, check fuel pump. If you do all that and still have problems, consult a magic 8 ball, then get a weber to replace the Hitachi

Was it cold out? Is the preheater hose and valve working on the air cleaner. If not your carburator may be icing up. Try pulling the fresh air hose off and running it for a while and see if that helps.
