Post subject: Gas in the oil??
PostPosted: Tue Mar 23, 2004 10:50 am
Ok..so here's the deal. My gas mileage SUCKS ( maybe 10 miles to the gallon ) I have'nt been able to pinpoint why, as of yet, but still looking. Anyway, I pulled the dipstick today and noticed that the oil smells like gas. Any sugestions as to why?? Could this be one of the many reasons my mpg is so bad??

Check your oil and if it is over full it could very well be that the fuel pump
is leaking fuel ito the crankcase. Or check to see if the choke is full off
when it is warmed up.
A choke not releasing can cause poor milage and some of the over rich
mixture will get by the rings into the crankcase.

Good luck

is the oil thiner than normal? the carb could be flooding the engine enough to let gas get by the rings into the crankcase.

Well, today I sprayed ethear around the carb and intake maifold. Of course the motor sped up. So could this be the reason mpg sucks...and why gas smell in the oil???

You have a vacuum leak. I think that could very well be your problem all around. Whacking one problem will get rid of the others most likely.

I don't know if I would be to conserned about the gas smell,un less it is just over whelming, but when you change your oil I would see if you can tell if there is alot of gas in your oil. As far as your mileage I would guess the Vac. leak isn't helping!! Definently check out the choke.

ok this is going to be the dumbest thing i will admit to any one. when i put the weber carb on my truck i didnt know what to hook the gas tank breather to and i had one exetra vacume line and that was the crank case breather( didnt know it) i put the 2 together and bam oilpressure read 0 at 40mph. iknow its bad . so that night i went home and changed the oil on my truck and noticed the gas smell in the oil. then the next day i undid my F*CK up and all is well.

My truck has the same problem, goes through alot of gas and runs really rich, I had a hell of a time getting it to pass I/M. My vacuum system doesn't even exist, so I'm going to rebuild it this weekend. Hopefully I can find all the valves and everything. But if it is the choke on my carb. . .It's running about double the limit on the I/M test, how do you fix it?

Narcisist

Don't know what the I/M term means. We don't have smog testing here in north Idaho yet. Anyway, I have the same kind of LUV you have. The biggest problem problem I had with the smog controls after replacing all the small vacuum hoses was the EGR valve. Even with a new EGR valve the engine wouldn't idle smooth after warm up until I pulled the EGR vacuum line off and plugged it. I suspect the detachable piece on the bottom of the intake manifold to which the EGR valve is mounted is clogged up with carbon just like the EGR valve was. I would recomment taking the intake manifold and the EGR valve mount off and cleaning them both out good. Also clean out the EGR valve. Be careful, the EGR valve has a diaphram inside it. Course I no longer have the problem. I have a Weber carb now.

I/M is smog. So, you think it's just the vacuum system that's got me all messed up? I'll check out that valve when I rebuild it. Thanks for the help, and so far, I think you're the closest person to where I live that I've talked to.

Another thing to do... change your oil before you get tested. The last time I had trouble passing I/M the guy told me to change my oil and come back through. It passed. He said probably 80% of the time thats enough to do it.
