At first I thought I had cross-threaded spark plugs. But when I asked the old owner he said I might have the wrong plugs because he did an engine swap couple years back, but he couldn't remember out of what. I've also learned that it has a G200 head on it. . .Can anyone tell me how to identify this engine to check for the right spark plugs, and anyother parts I might need... Thanks

There are a few guys around here that have or have had one of these.

A couple of years and he doesn't remember? that's just odd to me.

The guy's like, beyond old and has owned the truck since it was new, which is why I bought it. Gotta love the grandpa trucks. I work with the guys son, he's the one who did all the work on it and he put the engine in, but his dad never told him what it came out of.

Walmart - errr. I think number 65's is the plug for the regular head.

Yeah, I think that's right, I was gonna get 'em, but I work at Wal-mart and try real hard not to buy stuff from there, so I got some others from Autozone.

I should add, that the plugs on the 73 are not 65's, but smaller. Plug heads take a 16 MM wrench. Darndest thing I have ever seen.

Does the G200 head take the same spark plug as the stock engine in an 80 luv 4X4? I shoulda asked this question first, but I was just waking up and wasn't thinking.

This might help with plug id, but kind of geared away from trucks:

I just realized this, but before I tear the head off to fix the holes I think are cross-threaded, will the head gasket that I bought before I knew it had a G200 head fit? I'm kinda worried now, but glad I can check before I take it apart. Thanks.

there should be casting numbers somewhere. On my trooper it has 4ZE1 on the back of the head and on the driver side of the block. My LUVs motor has G180F on the same spot on the block that my troopers markings are. Im not shure about the head. As far as your headgasket goes, it should work. The blocks are the same so the general structure of the head should be the same, im not 100% on this though.

the casting number for the engine is down by the motor mount on the drivers side. if its a 1.9 it will be a g200. the head gasket will depend on what engine you have, not what head. so if the block says g180 then you have the 1.8 luv motor and the head gasket will work. if it says g200 then you need to take it back and get a gasket for a 83 - 87 isuzu pickup with a 1.9 motor. a good general year to select would be 85, right in the middle. the threads are the same on the 1.8 plugs and the 1.9 plugs. i have a 1.9 head on my 1.8 and i've used old plugs out of it on my 80 luv with 1.8 head. basically the only difference in the plugs is how hot of a spark it will have, if you still have points, you will want to buy plugs for the 1.8 luv. if you have the electronic ignition, buy plugs for the 1.9 isuzu.

Well, damn! :? It's a G200 block. Guess that means I go back to Autozone tomorrow. . .Is it a good or a bad thing to have the 1.9? Haven't heard too much about it. Yeah, it's got points, so I'll keep the plugs I've got now. Thank you so much.

I just checked Autozone.com and they have the same part number listed for the head gasket on the 1.8 abd 1.9. So unless they're lying to me, it should still work. So I'll be popping the head off tomorrow, Friday at about 5:30 after work at my bosses house. If it doesn't look like it'll fit then I'll take it back, but is there anything else different on these motors that I should be aware about, like the plug gap and other little stuff that could cause big problems. Thanks a ton. . .You're all geniuseseses. . .or something. :D

since you have points, use the spark plug cap for the 1.8, can't remeber off the top of my head what it is right now. the 1.9 is a good motor. my 85 pup has a 1.9 with over 100,000 miles and we have beat that truck to death. its as tuff as any motor i've ever seen and it has a little more power than the 1.8. isuzu just made a hell of a motor when they made the 1.8 and 1.9.
