i just pulled out a 1.9 today to put in my luv, i'll get some pics, i think the 1.9 is a little stronger motor than the 2.3 because the 2.3 has a timing belt, and i've never like a timing belt, i prefer timing chains. the 2.3 would be more powerful so i guess it would be the choice to put in if you were gonna go buy one of them. i had the 1.9 so i decide to swap it. don't sell your tranny, the 1.9 and 2.3 will bolt up to your stock tranny.

i pulled the 1.9 out today, i still have to pull out the 1.8 and install the 1.9 in the luv. everything looks the same. i'm going to be using a stock 1.9 carb out of an earlier isuzu truck. the one on the truck now is computer controlled. i have a hitachi carb off a 1.9 that was on my 80 luv for awhile till i got the carb off my 80 parts truck. all the motor mounts and bellhousing pattern look the same. i'm pretty sure the 5 speed isuzu tranny has an mechanical clutch, not hydraulic. i will take my digital camera out with me to work tommarow and take some pics of the swap process.

The one I pulled didnt have a hdyralic clutch. The crossmember I had to cut out, made the need for a brakcet that boltsto the tranny for the E-brake cable. If you do go with the 5speed, you will need the removable crossmember and the 4wd driveshaft (to the front axl). Also your stock driveline will need to be shortened with a new yoke on the end.
My mechanice welded brakets for the removable crossmember.
heres a linke of the post on mine:

i know the Isuzu MUA5 tranny is a hydro clutch. I also know that it had a diferent bell housing pattern than a 1.8L whith a 4 speed. So be carefull about the donor vehicle if your trying to keep the LUV 4speed. A 2.3L or 2.6L from a trooper will be diferent.
